The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship, mostly because I learned a great deal about investment banking as a industry and also had the chance to develop my technical skills a lot.
The colleagues at Nomura are super friendly and down to earth - more so than at other banks, it seems. I was given challenging and important projects to work on, which also showed that the colleagues valued me.
I was generally very happy with the support from management. Besides my boss, I was also assigned a mentor, a buddy and a supervisor from HR. All of these persons were very helpful in guiding me through the internship.
There was never a moment in the 10 weeks, where I had nothing to do. At the same time it wasn't very often where I was overly stressed or pressured on time, so the work load was well balanced.
I was definitely not running the show, but given my position in the organization, I was very happy to work on projects which actually mattered and had significance, and weren't just for show. I was also fortunate enough to have some of the results I achieved been utilized in the business.
I don't think the skills I learned during the summer will help me very much in my studies at university, however everything I learned during the summer are all core skills you need in investment banking, which is the career path I want to pursue in the future.
The Company
Good atmosphere. People are obviously very busy and focused (which is how the atmosphere in an investment bank should be), but it never felt uncomfortable and there was plenty of time to have a chat and a laugh.
Generally very well organized and clearly lined out. Before arriving I knew which desks I would be at during my internship. When at the desks my work assignments were coordinated by the desk's boss and other employees.
There were a number of seminars and training sessions, ranging from introductions to all the major desks in the bank to emotional intelligence and Excel training.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. I was very impressed by pretty much everyone I met in the company and also really liked the business in general, so the company is definitely somewhere I would like to work in the future.
The Culture
Really good atmosphere among the interns - again also compared to how it is at other banks (has been my impression from meeting interns at other banks).
Lots of opportunities to go for drinks, do charity and play sports.
