The Role
Really enjoyed it, every day was different, new tasks/challenges, especially stock pitches which were scary but learnt a lot. Have also been taken to a number of client meetings which I really appreciated because it was a rare opportunity to find out about the industry as a whole.
To add value as an intern is difficult, but you do feel as if you are actually contributing value to your team, especially the lengths colleagues will go to explain technical details and try to help you around your work. Everyone has been very helpful.
Generally felt like I could ask a question at any time and was supported well.
Quite busy, especially during the stock pitches, the whole week would fly by! But once I had been given my long term project I was more busy. Generally my manager tried to ensure I was never sitting around without work.
In my team, on a couple of occassions I had to submit the morning note which was quite a lot of responsibility but I really appreciated that.
Taking a finance module next year so hopefully my knowledge of accounting that has been learnt over the last few months will assist me with this.
The Company
Very good atmosphere, no feeling of constant assessment by my line managers and others and was encouraged to ask questions whatever they were. Generally a light hearted and relaxed atmosphere.
It was good, more structured learning would have been appreciated- for example a couple of finance classes for non- finance students in order to make sure it is more of a level playing field, especially in some more technical areas of the bank.
The training at the start of the internship could have been longer, other banks have a week whereas we had 2.5 days. This would be greatly appreciated by students with no finance background like myself,
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Looks like a good place to work. People are happy and generally have worked in the bank for a long time.
The Culture
Yes, a very nice group of interns, often socialised with them after work and a real collegiate feeling despite the competitive nature of any internship.
Did not live in accomodation but commuted from home. Travel was roughly £40pw which wasn't extortionate, however food and drink in the area are expensive as expected in London
Nice, big bar culture especially on Friday evenings, in the summer especially there is a nice atmosphere in Canary Wharf.
Not many, although I did take part int he citizenship challenge,
