The Role
I enjoyed my placement a great deal, I got to put the things that I had learnt at university into practice and was given alot of responsibility and trusted to complete important tasks. I liased with many senior members of staff and increased my confidence in my own ability a great deal.
Although I was a student on placement I felt like an equal to all the other staff and felt like valued employee and was an important member of the team.
Whenever I struggled with a task I could ask a manager or another member of staff for help and without hesitation they would help me. I was never made to feel like I was annoying them by asking 'silly' questions. They understood that I was here on placement to learn.
Some days were busier than others for example the first and last weeks of a month there was alot more work to do than in the middle two. I was never given hard to keep to deeadlines and if I had free time I would ask a manager for more work.
I was given enough responsibility for me to feel important but I didnt feel pressured. I was incharge of looking after budgets for a number of directorates and if there was any problems with budgets managers would come to me for advice.
I put lots of skills that I learnt at university into practice and I know i will use the skills i learnt this year to help me with my degree. I learnt alot of new excell skills which will appeal to future employers and will save alot of time when doing my university work next year. I know that I now have alot of skills to boost my CV and help me get a graduate job.
The Company
I worked in an open plan office which has its advantages and disadvantages, mainly being it is good because you get to know people who you wouldnt normally associate with but it is often easy to get distracted from a job when something is going on around you.
My placement was set up very easily with alot of help from my university placement office. The only issue I had during my application was the strict security application process I had to go through as I was going to be working for the NHS, my occupational health forms took a while to come back and the human resources department took a while to get my a start date.
The company sent me on several courses to teach me about finance for the NHS. I went on a course which introduced me to all the other undergratuate trainees, If i wanted to learn anything or go on a specific course I could ask my manager if it was possible.
Flexi Time
Above 25 days holiday
The NHS Gratuate scheme appeals to me a great deal, they help you get ACCA or CIMA qualified and there are lots of benefits aswell as a competitive salary.
The Culture
We went on several work nights out and they arranged a leaving night out for me when I finished my placement
I chose to live on my own which made living in Leeds expensive
Leeds has great nightlive
Work didnt encourage any activities amongst the staff outside of work.
