About You
The insight day for Centrica was very enjoyable. The day started with an icebreaker event involving working in teams to build a balloon tower. This was a great and relaxing way to start the day. The talks throughout the day had breaks that included activities such as a tour of the office, and meant that the day did not just involve sitting in a room listening to presentations. This helped to make the experience more enjoyable and I subsequently think that I gained more from it.
During the insight day at Centrica I felt valued by the company. For part of the event, there were some of the recent graduates who gave us the tour of the whole of the Centrica office who also each gave presentations on their experiences at Centrica. The fact that they took time out of their day to attend the insight event suggested to me that Centrica wished to ensure that we gained the maximum possible benefit from the day and subsequently I felt valued by the company.
This question does not seem that relevant to the insight day that I attended.
The team building activity at the beginning of the day I think shall help me in future team exercises. I believe it has helped to increase my confidence. The information I received at the insight day, such as that concerning the roles at the company, the work I would be expecting to complete in the first year as well as a discussion on the application process and tips to get the best outcome I believe shall be useful when it comes to applying to Centrica for a graduate job in the future. Furthermore, I believe the general advice given concerning the application process shall be useful for other graduate schemes as well.
The Company
The day appeared to be very well structured. It allowed me to gain experience and knowledge on a lot of areas at Centrica in a short amount of time. Furthermore, structuring the day to include Q&A sessions as well as the tour of the offices and the team exercise meant that the whole day was not just spent sitting in a room listening to the presentations. This meant the day was much more enjoyable and the good structure meant that I believed I could gain more out of the exercise. One problem with the structure of the day was that it was very intense, meaning the lunch break was quite short.
The atmosphere during the day was very welcoming and helpful. The graduate staff members present at Centrica were all very helpful, clear and honest in answering the questions that everyone at the insight day had.
I learnt a lot about the training and development for graduates at Centrica, both for professional qualification support as well as the softer skills such as presentation skills training. This was not that relevant to training I experienced because this was only an insight event.
I believe this was the aim for the day from the perspective of Centrica. We had talks from the graduates that gave an explanation of the day to day roles which enabled me to gain an understanding of what it would be like to have a full time role at Centrica. Furthermore, I discussed with a graduate the opportunities for promotion at Centrica as well as the non-qualification training to get an understanding of the training on offer as well as the career prospects.
This insight was very useful in helping to understand more about Centrica. The first talk that we were given included a discussion of the values at Centrica and why these were an important part of the company culture. These values then kept being discussed throughout the insight day.
This insight event was very useful in helping me to decide about my future career path. The discussion of the various roles on offer was useful, as I had previously been thinking about whether the finance or analyst roles would be more suitable to my skills. The discussion of the roles also helped me to decide which of these two I would prefer to do on a day-to-day basis, and I will also be applying to other companies for the finance role as the information I gained on this insight day helped me to decide that this was the role that I wished to pursue
Everything Else
I was reimbursed up to £100.
There was the opportunity to network with the graduates that had volunteered to be part of the presentations and give the tours of the buildings. I would have liked the opportunity to have also networked with some of the more senior members of the firm.
The networking opportunities during the insight day appeared to be rushed, and not the main part of the day. I believe having a more informal networking event at the end of the day and over lunch would have been successful and could have perhaps improved the event.
From asking the graduates at Centrica I was able to understand the opportunities that were available to the staff at Centrica to get involved in such as sports and volunteering. From what I gathered, most of the employees seemed to be involved in some kind of activities outside of work.
I would recommend this insight to friends as I was able to learn a lot about Centrica and the different roles available. Furthermore, it would help them to learn more about how to have a greater chance of success in the application process, as well as tips in preparing for the online tests as well as writing the answers to the questions on the application form. Furthermore, for the tips concerning the assessment centre and how is the best way to approach it.
