The Role
The team I worked with at Lloyds went the extra mile to make sure I had a variety of work which made the internship an enjoyable and interesting experience.
Everyone in my team welcomed me and made sure I was ok. They would regularly offer if I wanted to help them with some tasks, some of which were quite advanced, so in answer to the question, yes I did feel valued by my colleagues.
The environment was such that I was able to ask any question without hesitation and the team were always willing to help.
I was given plenty of work to do, some of it was projects that ran all the way through the internship while others were projects that only lasted a few hours. The team always made sure I had something to do.
I was given a very important task within 3 days of my internship starting. They were completely at ease with giving me this responsibility and even took me to meetings with very senior staff and I was encouraged to speak up as it was my project.
As the amount of tasks I was given varied so much, this gave me a great opportunity to develop a variety of skills. Examples included my analytical skills, presentational skills and critical thinking skills to solve problems all of which can be applied in my final year of university and in my future career.
The Company
Within the team the atmosphere was very friendly as were most people in the office. Obviously its a place of work and people are working, providing an atmosphere where you could work. Most people left the office by 6 so this meant from 5 the office got progressively quieter which I quite enjoyed as I feel I work more productively in this sort of atmosphere.
My internship was organised very well. My line manager ensured I had all the equipment and software before I started my internship and all the big tasks were lined up before I came as well, it couldn't have been organised to a higher standard.
A lot of investment was made into my training and development, from the general talks that other teams are given to one to one training sessions and information sessions that I attended. If I found something new I could very easily go and talk to someone about it so I could learn about it.
Very appealing, as not only did Lloyds give me a great insight into the banking sector but it made it clear how careers can develop it also made it clear it appreciated the work I was doing and this is something that really appeals to me.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene with many of the other students and colleagues. Some events where set up by the bank and other events were set up by ourselves, all of this enabled us to easily integrate with each other and go out and have fun.
Working in London means its expensive but that is to be expected and the wage is reflects this. The area I worked in, London Wall, although it was expensive it was, when out with colleagues I didn't have to worry about this(they paid)! It was a great experience socially.
I worked in central London so there was a vast quantity of places to go at night and there was always someone else who wanted to go there. It was fantastic, although at time expensive but I wholly recommend working in London.
Not particularly, mainly because the work load on the internship meant that I was working from 8am-7pm easily most days, I didn't mind this at all, it was my personal choice. Although this does mean that I wasn't particularly interested in pursuing any activities outside of work.
