The Role
The internship was a great experience with a lot of exposure to different areas within Capital Markets. Perfectly organized by HR, we could rotate between different desks, meet senior employees of the bank and build up our network for a possible career start. A demanding yet rewarding experience overall.
Despite the tense atmosphere on the trading floor I felt that everybody was genuinely interested in sharing his/her experience of working for the firm. I did not feel like being treated as "an intern" but as somebody who could potentially become valuable to the firm as a whole.
Management, mentor and supervisors were in support of all times and provided guidance where appropriate. Making up the decision where I want to work within the bank wasnt an easy one and I had a whole number of discussions with management and supervisors about it.
Generally quite busy as the internship involves two major projects with presentations at the end. In addition, the desk gave me some work on live-deals (mainly analytical and presentations) as well as administrative tasks. The rest of the time was spent workshadowing different people across the floor.
The degree of responsibility highly depends on your own reliability and willigness to go the extra mile. I was given a high degree of responsibility in some projects, while others were closely monitored by my manager. Overall, the degree of responsibility was above average for an intern.
We received a variety of skill trainings (technical and personal), career sessions and knowledge sessions with senior employees. Overall I developed a great understanding of financial markets in comparison to what I knew before and got a good understanding of the products being traded across the floor.
The Company
Very busy at times but always friendly - expected people to have even less time for me but instead I had some great conversations and gained valuable insights from different people aross the floor. Different teams have different working atmospheres and one of the challenges of the internship is to find out where you like to be in the future.
It was perfectly organized from start to end - couldnt have gone any better.
The firm organized a two-digit number of knowledge sessions from different product areas within Fixed Income and Equities, which was great to build market knowledge without actually working in the particular area.

Generally, the company rewards motivated people with opportunities for full-time employment - if one particular area does not have a spot to fill then active support is provided to find an alternative area.
The Culture
The intern cohort overall was very enjoyable and diverse - we had a lot of fun outside the bank as well. Additionally, networking and intern drinks / parties were organized for us, which was great to get to know eachother in the beginning.
London is obviously not the cheapest of all cities but the combination of expenses during the work week and the higher costs of weekend fun is overall acceptable
Nightlife area in St. Pauls / London offered a lot of after-work drink and party opportunities - all locations were regularly visited by the intern cohort alone and together with the firms employees.
The variety of opportunities was crazy - football on the weekends, volunteering work, art galleries and expositions, movie evenings and non-touch rugby tournaments
