The Role
The first 5 weeks of the internship were not very good. Before I arrived my line manager passed me on to a different line manager which left me very unsettled having already begun to get to know my first line manager. When I arrived my line manager did not want me as she wasn't prepared for my arrival, due to the late change, and so she didn't make me feel very comfortable. Emerging Talent did not relocate me to the location of my internship as promised, I have had a 2 hour plus comute door to door morning and evening, and due to the trian times I cannot arrive in the office before half 8 meaning I couldn't do the role they had set up for me to do as that role invovled being in before 8. This meant my first weeks were unorganised and I had little work. However, in the last 5 weeks the experience improved, my office funded a business trip to another office for me where I sourced two projects - emerging talent had refused to pay for this trip which was annoying as the trip provided me with the only work I've been given in this internship. Off the back of this I became involved in project work and got to do some processes too, and I also visited a lot of different offices across the country so I enjoyed my last few weeks as they were productive and informative.
Colleagues were very happy to answer questions and help in whichever way they could. It was a little tricky to begin with as the team I was placed in already don't have enough work to go round, but everyone is really friendly and helpful.
First few weeks not much, my line manager was not helpful and left me to my own devices meaning I had no support, but in the last few weeks I have been fully supported in project work and office visits, my line manager has been great at helping me do all of this.
I have had little to do across the internship, the project work I am doing keeps me occupied but there is not enough of it to fill my time. The first five weeks were mostly sitting around which was frustrating as I wanted to get involved with different things but couldn't due to the practical situation of commuting, and the trips and wrok I have been doing in the last few weeks I had to organise myself mostly.
When I had work I was trusted with it and given lots to do, I created a process map for a process I had only been introduced to the week before and it was a lot of responsibility as I was reporting directly into management. Colleagues are very trusting and don't let the fact that you're an intern stop them from giving yo responsibility for things.
I saw a lot of the theory I've learnt at uni become reality in this job which will be useful in future to apply it, and I've had a lot of contact with many different people which has developed my confidence and people skills.
The Company
Very good atmosphere, everyone was friendly and there was lots of charity stuff happening too, and everyone got on well.
My line manager changed before I arrived, and Emerging Talent did not communicate with the office at all and because of this they didn't realise the need to live locally so I could do the role. The office had prepared for me and got a good structure for my time but this had to be scrapped as I couldn't do the role becuase of train times.
Webinars along the way were useful, and people were happy to give feedback and help out. People always had time for me.
Subsidised Canteen
Graduate scheme is very good and the opportunity to progress from the internship to the graduate job is well planned, if I get offered a role I would consider taking it as it is a good scheme.
The Culture
Very good but hard for me to acess due to not living with the other interns.
Lived in London so it was very expensive. Emerging Talent offer a living allowance for those living in London as it is more expensive, but they refused to give it to me because I wasn't working in London despite the fact I've been living there.
Due to the commute I didn't experience the night life but colleagues told me it was poor.
Not many due to the commute and because I was living in my student flat and not with the interns.
