The Role
During my 4 week internship I enjoyed to opportunity to work on four different clients within the Audit Business to Business Sector. This gave me the chance to work with four different teams and network within the department with colleagues at all levels.
In each team I felt as though I was given tasks which allowed me to add value to the team and audit. I believe that the tasks I completed held the same responsibility as those of a first year graduate and the team were thankful for my contributions.
I was given a Performance Manager during my four weeks and also a buddy for each client that I worked on. I set goals and feedback sessions with my in charge each week and everyone in my team was always happy to answer any questions.
Despite being a quieter time of the year for Audit I was always occupied with a task to complete. I was also able to work on tasks which were at different stages of the audit including both planning and testing.
I believe that during my internship I was given the same responsibility as a first year graduate at KPMG. The teams were also happy to allow me to interact with clients both by email and in person, without the guidance of others in the team.
I am taking part in an Audit module during my final year at university so the experience will definitely assist me in this module. I also developed on many transferable skills including verbal and written communication.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very friendly and relaxed. I often sat with the team that I was working with during that week but also got the chance to interact with a lot of other graduates that were sitting nearby.
The internship was very well organised, I was given a clear structure to the clients I would be working during the four weeks. I also felt I was given sufficient information so that I knew who to contact with various questions.
During the four weeks I was able to meet with two different partners in the Business to Business sector who gave me great insight to KPMG and also useful career development tips. Additionally I was able to meet with a manager who gave me information on how the tender process works.
The graduate scheme a KPMG is very appealing at 3 years long with the opportunity to complete the ACA qualification. There is also a choice of which sector to enter and the opportunity to work on a variety of clients.
The Culture
I was able to attend one social during my time at KPMG where we were put into teams with people that we did not know. This was a great way to meet more people within the Business to Business sector. I have also been told that when you join as a graduate, it is very sociable.
London is an expensive area to live both to rent and socialise however KPMG always work to provide the living wage so that all employees feel comfortable and happy at work.
Canary Wharf and London in general have a variety of restaurants and bars that are brilliant to meet more people. Along with bars there are also many nightclubs open in London to carry on dancing the night away!
I was proactive during my four weeks and took the opportunity to get involved in volunteering for KPMG. I worked with a local youth club on 'preparing young people for the world of work' and the sessions were based on preparing for interviews.
