The Role
The placement experience is generally very enjoyable, because most people are very friendly and supportive. However, workload and working hours are fairly heavy as the business is in a process of cutting headcount because of being in a difficult market.
Most colleagues pay a lot more attention to your capability and skills than your job title. My ideas, skills and contribution is respected and appraised by colleagues. It makes me feel inclusive.
Very little support and training was provided by managers. I was given a tool manual to study on my own and pushed out to various people in Finance for learning about their functions and roles. They never hold my hands through any works. Therefore, I have to work and learn things on my own initiative.
The work is so demanding that I can only take half an hour lunch time. The works not only lie on project works but also on supporting other Finance staff on MI reporting from Data Warehouse.
I assumed strong responsibility already two weeks after commence. I am often trusted to take control of small projects with IT or Operations. Occasionally, I have to deal with project work and adhoc requests from Finance floor when team members are away on holiday.
Company core trainings such as Presentation and Facilitation training are very valuable and transferable. Throughout the year, I had a lot of opportunities to improve my presentation as well as confidence. Communication and interpersonal skills have definitely grown. My IT technical skills have completely gone up to a new level, which I can take with to any other jobs or companies.
The Company
It is very cheerful and happy atmosphere except from month or quarter end because everyone is so busy with work.
It is fairly organized. We have monthly intern meeting run by interns where all interns gather to discuss things. There is a HR person dedicated to look after interns' issue.
Both the company and team have strong emphasis on investing time training its staff.
Subsidised Canteen
There is a good possibility to get on its FMP program if managers provide recommendation and good feedback about you. I know 4 current staff once worked in the business as interns.
The Culture
If you like playing football, there is a Finance football team, which plays every week. There is also a paid for Finance get-together at bar after work every quarter.
It is fairly expensive to find a place to live in Watford and it does not offer much entertainment or soicalising.
Watford is a small town so there are only a few clubs and bars.
There is a nice park and canal nearby business park, where you can do some jogging or walking. There are a couple of gyms and bars in town.
