The Role
The whole experience was amazing, from what I learnt, to my manager and colleagues
My manager had a lot time off for personal reasons I was often left by myself to run the desk acting as a consultant and speaking to clients on a daily basis. It was one of the busiest desks in the UK with lots of checks on candidates so I had a massive challenge. My colleagues helped me out whenever I was having difficulties with a client or struggling for candidates, but I know I was really appreciated for the hard work I put in. I was always complimented, congratulated and thanked for my hard and have been asked time and time again to come back to Hays afterwards, even from Directors that I had little contact with,
I was given lots of guidance and support by my direct manager.
The day was literally non-stop from 8:30 until 6:00. I often would take a sort lunch hour and be so so exhausted by the end of the day however, I would much rather have a placement like this than my housemates who often came back saying they had nothing to do today !?!
I literally was running the show. Like I said my manager took a lot of time off so I built up relationships with my managers clients and was even given my own client and half the things I was doing was not in my job spec. At the beginning, I had 4 training days and missed out on the client days because apparently I wouldn't need it, but I really should have gone on it as I spent more time talking to them than my manager did.
Definitely learnt skills for life, from the basic speaking on the telephone, to sales, negotiation, persuasion, giving bad news (candidate didn't get the job), organisational and planning. Also: setting and meeting deadlines, telling off naughty candidates, challenging clients on their requests etc.
The Company
On some days the atmosphere was amazing, really good vibe, but because of the competitive nature and salesy consultants, it could get very heated and tense. I made sure I did not get involved in this, but definitely an experience I'm glad I had to prepare me for the future.
It wasn't really like I was moving about and doing different projects or working with different departments, this was my job foe the year from the word go. I was essentially doing the same thing from the beginning to the end however I got more skilled at my job.
I got 5 very good training days in London and training continued throughout the year on special days when were would swap hints and tricks about managing our candidates in the current market.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
If I decided to, I know there is a place for me back at Hays.
The Culture
We often went out for drinks after work and there was the Christmas and end of Financial Year party to go to which was travel and alcohol expenses paid.
I go to Uni here to the prices are as much as London, the salary was given did not reflect living costs however I was given a £3k bonus as the end because I worked so hard and did so well.
Oxford is ok, expensive though.
You work in an office and the Offices are spread all over the UK so anything you do would be with your office colleagues.
