The Role
I found that research was not really for me and I didn't particularly enjoy working so much in a lab and the work was quite repetitive.
Everyone was really lovely and if you ever needed help they were really approachable. I've made some really good friends
I spoke to/saw them most days to discuss my work and there was always someone around to help.
It varied some days were very busy with lots to do and other days there wasn't much at all
I was running experiments by myself and when I had my own project I was coming up with my own ideas for further experiments. I was in control of my own time deciding when I needed to do what.
I further developed time management skills and my independence which will be beneficial for whatever career I go into. Lab skills are beneficial for my final year project. Ive also stopped leaving work until the last minute as I was at uni so hopefully I will carry this through for my final year as well.
The Company
Everyone was really fun and my whole department would go for coffee breaks together.
Once I started it was well set up but before that we were waiting a long time for contracts and to find out about what we were meant to do on out first day, etc.
The first few months of the placement were basically training and I wasn't really expected to have good results in my experiments.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
During my placement it was announced that Pfizer was exiting the site so most people were losing their jobs. I also found research is not for me so I am not looking towards a scientist role once I graduate.
The Culture
There were loads of other placement students and we all went out a lot, there was something happening most weekends and for the first couple of weeks we were out most nights. We also had a few department nights out too
Rent was a lot cheaper than at uni! Some of the bars were quite expensive though
Canterbury was quite close so that is always a possibility but we never really go out there. There are quite a few bars/pubs were we live so we usually go there or to people's houses.
There are a lot of classes at the gym and loads of sports teams.
