The Role
Great people, smart and helpful. The various networking events were very helpful to building up the network within the bank across departments.
It is definitely encouraged to get to know the team well, especially in investment banking, as you will be spending so much time together. I feel very comfortable in my team and people are all very nice. To put it this way, there is no one single person I won't meet for a drink on a weekend.
People were very patient and helpful depsite the stressful day-to-day. But it is also important to take initiatives to ask questions, in a structured and efficient way, of course.
I am always occupied most of the time, sometimes the work gets overwhelming but it is never unmanagable. It is imporant voice your concerns of being bored/too busy/not enough sleep because otherwise it gets overseen, simply because people are too busy with their work to notice if you don't tell them.
Depending on your personal background, people tend to give different level of responsibilities. I studied finance so am a bit more familiar with the day-to-day, therefore I was given some interesting tasks including modeling, both from scratch and add-ons. It was very enriching in terms of technical skills.
Apart from the technical skills of finance, I learnt important lessons of clear communication, expectation management, priority and how to get most of the things done in the shortest time, whch are indeed skills for life.
The Company
Fun never stops, especially around dinner time and Thursday / Friday. We always take the chance to go for a drink / coffee once a week as a big team and it is always very fun knowing your director outside work as a person.
Very impressive organisation, the HR and campus recruiting team especially has been extremely helpful. The only pity is that our administrative issues as overseas students (e.g. bank card, national insurance, tax codes and refund) has to be done all by ourselves, which can be challenging given the day-to-day workload.
There were training workshops running through the entire internship, and 1 week of training out of 9 week of internship was definitely on the higher end on the Street. Training was not only about banking-related skills, but some very useful skills like personal development, networking skills and, especially, women-focused sessions.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Too early to say, but I do hope the answer is positive. Most teams are very squeezed in terms of resource, thus I guess hiring is on the way in general.
The Culture
Yes, there were a lot of social events for interns and we are always encouraged to go by our team. Interns are all very nice and open to discuss, a happy and fun bunch.
London is an expensive city, but the salary is definitely enough to cover it - if you don't go partying all day and everyday you should be fine. Besides dinner and cabs home are usually covered by the company, therefore nothing to spend on that side.
East side of London is the place to be - lots of bars, cafes, lively neighbourhood.
The nature of the work can be very demanding, even on weekends. So this is the side where you might miss out. But I had at least two weekends off per month, which is not bad.
