The Role
I feel I have gained a lot of skills and confidence from the role and have enjoyed the experience of being out of university and being within a real business environment. I also found the work I was involved with interesting.
The department was very friendly and everyone is supportive of each other in their roles. I felt that I was doing a real job and was valued as many people in the department relied on my for providing data.
Everyone is willing to help answer questions that you have and to help you in your role. Every undergraduate is also assigned a mentor with whom I could talk about any issues I had, and to help organise any training or other opportunites I wished to experience during my year.
I was busier some days than others, but didn't often feel like I was far too busy, or that I did not have enough to do. Overall the workload was of a good level.
I felt that I was given a real level of responsibility, providing data for many ad hoc requests and monthly meetings attended by several managers in the department.
I feel I have developed many new skills through the placement, and that I can apply these in my final year at university and after I have graduated.
The Company
Everyone in the department was friendly.
The placement scheme at GM is a large scheme so everyone around understands the situation when you begin your placement and need help settling in at first. There is formal two week handover period, where existing undergraduates teach the new student about the job. The new stduents are also provided with plenty of information from the previous student in their role and from the people that run the undergraduate programme.
Some basic training courses such as Excel and presentation skills were given at the beginning of the placement.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Jobs are offered to several graduates per year who have done a placement with the company.
The Culture
There were a large number of placement students at the company, so there was a lot of socialisng, however it is unfortunately largely focused on drinking and can be rather cliquey.
Housing was not too expensive and cheaper than it had been for me at university, with bills included.
Luton only has one club (Liquid), which is not very good.
Undergraduates go out often.
