The Role
This was a very enjoyable placement due to a number of factors. 1) The flexible smaller placements allowed me to tailor the year to my areas of interest. 2) The job involved building nuclear submarines- a facinating and unique product 3) There was a large graduate/placement community so there was plenty of opportunity to make friends and meet people.
The industrial placement students are treated the same as the graduates and therefore have a high level of responsibility. The staff were generally very friendly and encouraged me to engage in the 'office spirit'.
There is a dedicated manager for the Early Careers department who gave a large amount of support throughout the placement. In addition objectives are set by the placement managers and support you in achieving these goals.
This varied between individual placements, but at the minimum there was enough to keep me interested. For one placement I was very busy which suited me well.
Again this vaied between placements, but in my final placment I was project managing tasks that were significant within the business.
Soft skills such as general time management and independent working skills will be very useful in the future. I also developed my engineering skills in projects.
The Company
The atmosphere was generally excellent within the smaller offices, but large offices are more reserved.
As it is tied in with the graduate scheme the placement is very well organised.
The company allowed me to participate in an excellent 10 day leadership training course at great expense.
Flexi Time
National Travel
I was offered a place on the Graduate Scheme when I finish university.
The Culture
There was a large graduate/placement population who were keen to socialise
Housing on average £70 per week Average pint £2.50
Small town with a disproportionate amount of bars and clubs. Cheap and cheerful, but a good laugh with a large group of friends from work!
Placement students are encouraged to take part in a lot of voluntary extra curricular activities such as working with schools, organising charity events, careers fairs etc. Also the town is on the edge of the lake district so there is a large amount of outdoor pursuits available.
