The Role
I have had a fantastic time on my internship at Savills. Everyone in the office has been extremely friendly and very helpful to me. They were all very willing to spend the time to answer my questions and explain any tasks to me. I have enjoyed learning about the work at Savills while making long lasting relationships.
This varied in different departments. However, on the whole I felt very valued by my colleagues at Savills. I was trusted to complete difficult tasks independently and once I proved I was capable of dealing with these I was given more responsibility. Everyone treated me with respect and although I was only a summer intern I felt I managed to fit in with everyone well.
All my colleagues were very approachable and I was able to receive support and guidance from them throughout the placement. I was also give a mid-placement review where I was given the opportunity to raise any issues I had. Needless to say I did not need to address any issues, but it was good to know that I would have been able to if necessary.
Generally I was very busy daily. I was given a number of different tasks to complete each day and throughout the week. If I finished a task then I was always presented with a new one if I asked. In addition to this I was given a project to complete over the month from the graduate team. This ensured that I was never left with nothing to do.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility throughout my placement. This did vary in different departments as due to the nature of the work I was not always given the chance to take on work. However, this level of responsibility given to me did increase as my internship went on.
I have learnt so much from my internship. I will be doing a postgraduate in property this year and the skills and experience I have had will be extremely useful for my degree. It will be very helpful to look back to practical experience when learning about it in theory terms. I have also learnt important office skills such as communication and teamwork which will be very useful in the future.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was great - everyone is very hard working but they are also extremely friendly. It was very easy to chat to everyone whether it was work related or not. It is very important to have a balance between these. Savills has a great ethos and are a great company to work for.
The internship was well organised. I was informed of the departments I would be working in each week on the first day. I was then given work from these departments each week. The work load between the departments varied, but I was able to go out on site visits with each department which was great.
I did not have any particular training as I was only with the company for 1 month.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to work for Savills in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people in the Glasgow office and the ethos of Savills as a company is very appealing. I hope to be considered for their Graduate programme next year.
The Culture
I attended 3 different socials while on my placement. One of which was a RICS event for all surveyors and people in the property industry. This was a great opportunity to network and chat to other companies. The other socials were casual drinks with the office - these were great fun and gave me the chance to speak to other colleagues from the office.
Glasgow city centre is reasonably priced for living and socialising. However, on both the office socials the head of office was kind enough to buy drinks for everyone.
Nightlife in Glasgow is good. There are a lot of different bars and clubs to choose from at a range of prices. However, I did not go out in Glasgow during my placement except on the office socials.
Unfortunately as I was only working for Savills for one month I did not get the chance to get involved in outside activities.
