The Role
I found that on the whole the placement was very well structured, giving me an opportunity to work across a range of accounting areas and let me tackle difficult projects fairly early on.
The Finance team at the Royal Free is on the whole very friendly - if you have a good attitude you will be constantly entertained whilst the day flies by whilst your working - especially if you like football.
I was guided through all the processes and was tasked to make procedure notes for those to come after me.
Like all place there are busy days where I'm working over time and others where I finish everything within the first hour - but if you have university work this is perfect. I will say though the Flexi Time program they have is amazing.
After the first 5 months I was put in charge of an account that had an outstanding balance of 630k and I was tasked with reconciling 3 years of data and proving recharges to an external vendor. On top of that I was given the opportunity to do 2 lean processing tasks that I ran myself and organise timetables for a lean processing course.
Whilst I did not get an opportunity to do any management accounts or alot of double entry - I gained a lot of additional skills that you cant really replicate in university - like how to deal with stubborn vendors, juggle 4 projects with 3 managers demanding time - Ive also had alot of lean working experience which will definately benefit me in my career.
The Company
There was definately some dull days but on the whole the atmosphere is good and there is always someone to talk to
80% of the time it was fantastic 15% of time it was abit rough and 5% terrible - like anywhere else.
I was put on a finance for the NHS learning day and a 3 month NVQ in Business Improvement Techniques.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
In the current economic climate and the advent of the 'white paper' on the NHS, no one can really be certain at the moment.
The Culture
NA for me as I was the only student.
London is a little expensive - its to be expected - but not terrible for eating (2.50 for a chicken sandwich that takes 30-40mins just to eat) or sports (£24 per month for gym 2.50 per squash session)
The stag is the finance teams place of choice - good pub with a nice selection and your only 15mins away from camden.
N/A for me
