The Role
The only reason I do not give full marks is because sometimes it WAS a struggle! But I mean this in a good way, as I feel like I grew to thrive off the time pressure and the volume of work. I would have been bored if we hadn't been pushed too.
Many people at Nabarro did the Summer Scheme once upon a time, and it's clear that they can empathise with our position. Everybody at the firm really appreciates any task you do for them, regardless of how complex or time-consuming it is or is not.
The Trainee Resources team were excellent and very supportive. They made it clear that they were just an email or a phone call away. In addition Nabarro operate a system whereby each summer student is allocated a buddy and a supervisor within their department. Both my buddy and my supervisor were really helpful, and were keen to make sure I was being offered some stimulating work and having a good time.
In the middle week especially I felt very busy! I feel cheeky for saying that because I'm sure the solicitors and secretaries around me were rushed off their feet, but the combination of many urgent tasks from my department with Proejct Nabarro, and the social events from Nabarro kept me busy and on my toes, and it has made the three weeks fly by!
Many of the tasks do not involve a great deal of responsibility. They are to help people out and save time. However, for quite a few tasks I was delegated a fair amount of responsibility - this included in depth analysis of documents or research towards the start of client matters, checking documents are in order and signatures are in place right at the end of deals, and completing urgent tasks that you would only get one chance to get right. I enjoyed the responsibility that came with these tasks. It made me feel part of the bigger Nabarro picture and gave me a real chance to show what I can offer in the working environment.
This is the easiest to answer. I have learnt an awful lot over the three weeks about myself, Nabarro and what it is like to be a solicitor. I have kept a personal record of it all so that I can refer to it in future, and I envisage that the skills and training I picked up at Nabarro will help me no end in the future.
The Company
Excellent. I was in the Banking Department who are renowned at Nabarro and beyond for being a lovely team.
The fact that the scheme is so well thought out was the main reason I applied in the first place. Down to the planning that has gone into the placement we had a combination of the Summer Scheme Project work, 2-3 social events per week, and departments willing to throw lots of work our way, which made for a fulfilling experience.
There were two days of inductions at the start of the placement, which was appreciated and came in handy throughout the scheme. More importantly, the Members of my department were always willing to take the time to explain the background behind the client matter, or to highlight the skills needed to complete a certain task. That was the biggest learning curve. There was also a networking session one evening - crucial for budding solicitors like us!

VERY! 90% of Trainee intake comes from the summer scheme at Nabarro, which is an encouraging statistic. It is made clear that if you do your best and show what you've got to offer on the Summer Scheme then you're in with as good a chance as anybody!
The Culture
This has been the most pleasant surprise of the summer scheme for me. I have got lucky in that the other eleven summer students on the same scheme as me are all great people and we all get on really well. It doesn't feel like we're competing against each other.
Expensive generally, because this is London. However, the summer scheme involved many evenings with free bars and even included a few free meals and canopés which really helped!
I know that London has a great nightlife but I didn't get much opportunity to sample it over the three weeks. I was usually too tired!
I had the opportunity to play cricket, football, and we went on an Olympic Tour!
