The Role
I really enjoyed the fact that there was always something new to do. You continually worked with different people and on different projects. There is a lot to learn and I never got bored. You get to speak to company management and the skills and knowledge you gain is extensive
EY have a very people friendly culture. From day one coaching was given and colleagues continually would ask how you are doing and whether you needed any help. Help was always available and you could get help from anyone in your team from senior managers to executives etc
As mentioned coaching and training made available was fantastic! I always felt I was supported
90% of the time you will be incredibly busy especially during peak audit season
The key to how much responsibility you are given is always ask for more! If you want to work on a specific area or on a particular project just ask! I was given more and more responsibility as the year went, and as I became more confident and my audit knowledge grew. Some takes were sometimes a bit challenging but help was always available
I gained key business and professional skills! Coaching was not only limited to the work at hand but I was also coached on business etiquette e.g. how to write emails to important client staff.
The Company
Was hardly in the office! You're always at the client site! Some client offices were more interesting than others. The most important thing however is working with a good team and you also trying to encourage a good team working environment.
I did not feel like a placement student but rather a graduate and full time employee of EY
A huge investment is made of placement student as they would hope that if you perform well both in work and exams (yes you sit the first two professional accountancy exams either ACA/CA) that they would have trained you well enough for them to strongly consider you coming back after you graduate
Flexi Time
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Well if you perform well they will almost certainly employ you as a graduate. Just remember that your placement year is basically a 1 year interview! They will be watching how you work and assess whether you work at the level expected as a graduate. I had this in mind from the get go and that's how I got my offer
The Culture
Team outings and Friday after work drinks every now and then. Plus throughout the year there are quite a few events solely for placement students (a chance to reunite with everyone again) and some for all employees of certain levels nationwide
I worked in the Reading office so still pretty expensive but cheap compared to London.
Not much going on in Reading but every now and again there were opportunities to have drinks after work
Student recruitment events mainly! Get involved!
