The Role
I enjoyed my 10 weeks a lot. The team I was working with were very friendly and the other interns were good fun too. I was put in charge of a new team starting the day I arrived so I had quite a bit of responsibilities and I experienced all the challenges that one may encounter when starting a new projects. However, the site I was in was far from the provided accommodation and wasn't very dynamic.
I had a lot of responsibilities in the last two week of my internship as the flow leader in my team was on holidays. I was in charge of the team, the allocation of the work and communicating with various other departments to ensure work flow.
I always had something to do and I was always given guidance on how to achieve my tasks. My line manager and flow leader were very helpful and friendly and always asked for feedback on my tasks to adjust them to my expectations and need for responsabilities
At the start of the internship I did a lot of observation and helping other people out with their tasks so I wasn't very busy but near the end I was very busy and had a lot of responsibilities which I enjoyed a lot.
I had to allocate the work and ensure my team would achieve targets on a daily basis. I was also in charge of escalating any issues and was on a weekly call to the project manager to provide feedback and get regular updates of issues/actions. I was also in charge of the visual management for the team and organizing team meeting to enable team members to express their ideas/feelings and catch up on a monthly basis.
I developed invaluable managerial skills that will be very useful in my future career. This internship also helped me understand how to develop a new project and the risk considerations that are essential to take into consideration before launching a new project.
The Company
The people in the office were extremely friendly. Everyone got on very well and I was an integral part of the team straight away.
Well organised as a whole. We had regular catch up calls to track our progress and provide feedback and a pack with goals for each week. However, my line manager didn't seem to be aware of how the referral process worked. Also, HR are very difficult to get in touch with as no phone number is provided and emails are not always answered which makes it hard to ask questions or get support.
I did a lot of personal improvement with my Line Manager as she gradually encouraged me to hold team huddles by myself which increased my confidence in public speaking. I also felt like my role was valued and needed within the team.
I would definitely consider a career within the organisation as I like the values of the company and I liked the fact that everyone was so helpful and encouraging when I tried to get insight days in different departments.
The Culture
Not in my placement location (Chester) but I was living with 5 other interns in Manchester which were very friendly and good fun.
We had to commute every day to work approx 1h30 on the train each way and 1h by car. At first we got the train everyday which cost us around £370 a month, then luckily we found a colleague that could drive us every morning and back for £20 a week. We didn't socialize at all in Chester as people generally came in and out everyday. In Manchester prices are reasonable.
A large variety of bars and clubs in Manchester.
There was only one networking event in Chester where only three people were present. Nothing was organised outside of work for us. I feel like we were very disadvantaged in terms of networking events that seemed to happen a lot in London especially.
