The Role
Although I didn't expect this kind of work to be interesting to me personally, my line manager and the team were open and friendly which meant that even when I didn't find the work all that interesting, I still enjoyed coming into the office
Colleagues continuously kept me involved in the projects they themselves were involved in, giving me meaningful tasks to help them reach their targets and letting me know when I did things well and in what ways I had helped the project move along
Any questions I had were answered straight away, even if it meant my line manager had to interrupt a call she was on. I was given a lot of background information on the projects I was working on, and regular catch ups were scheduled in our diaries to make sure everything was okay throughout the placement,
Being kept busy was one of the main positives of this internship. Although some tasks were better than others, having work to do made the days go a lot quicker and I felt more involved.
I wasn't given anything that made me feel uncomfortable since I was new to an office setting and new to banking. However I was given tasks to work on independently and a lot of trust was put in me to be able to carry them out properly.
I learned how to balance my time very well, and am now aware of how much I can get done in a day. I'm more confident in communicating with people in environments that I don't necessarily know a great deal about.
The Company
Everyone seemed happy to be at work (even if they weren't), and took the time to talk to me and find out how my internship was going.
No issues materialised and communication between me and the bank was good.
Online "webinars" were available in a variety of different subjects including excel etc. This was helpful for any future tasks/employment I have within or outwith the bank. My line manager also took the time to fill out a reflection of the skills I have gained and showcased throughout my internship.
Working from home
Everyone I have spoken to at lloyds speaks highly of their graduate programme and are very encouraging. The contacts I have made throughout the bank during my time would make taking a job with them in the future even more appealing. My line manager has done everything she could to let me know as much as possivble about the graduate scheme and help me to get on to it - everyone is there to help you get a graduate job if you want one, and if you put in the effort you'll be happy with the outcome.
The Culture
Graduates and interns organised nights out/pub nights throughout the internship
Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival is slightly more expensive, although there's always cheap drinks and free shows somewhere
Clubs open until 5am during the Fringe Festival. Beer gardens and pubs always busy, great atmosphere.
Working days were only until 5pm, and my line manager appreciated that I had other commitments outside of work and so was great with letting me go on time or slightly early if necessary and didn't expect work to be done past 5pm!
