The Role
I really enjoyed my placement because everybody at the company made me feel valued and as tohugh I was actually making a difference to their tam and not just doing menial tasks! I was given actual responsibility from the start, and although it was difficult it was worth it.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. I travelled a faior amount due to my placement being based upon region rather than product sector, so I met a large amount of people, often for just a short space of time, but they still acted as though I was a valued colleague who was making an impact on their job rol.e
Each intern is given a line manager to report to on their team, so you have a point of call to go to if you have any questions or concerns, which was useful as some questions you think 'oh I don't want to ask a stupid question' but that is what they are there for!! No need to be shy here!
The work fluctuated a fair amount due to my job role being dependent upon the reuslt of meetings & deals etc, so some days you would come in with a structured to do list and just have to drop it all to work on a totally different piece of work due to a change in circumstances or customer request. Really interesting!
During my internship, I was given a lot of responsiblity as I said. I have had placements where I leave and feel like I have made 0% impact upon a team & they don't even notice I'm gone. Here, it is toally different with things you do actually making a visible impact on both your team & the customer.
For me it is will - I am going into my 3rd year and I can definitely tell that it will help my studies - I have been able to relate things that I have learnt in my lectures to my job and vice versa I am sure. Some theories don't necessarily make sense when you are revising them but definitely do when you put them into practice!
The Company
The atmosphere was one of responsiblity and hard work, but you could tell there was room for a joke or a casual conversation - the people on each team are all real people (which is sometimes hard to remember!) and despite being incredibly clever, are very down to earth and welcoming.
Compared to a placement I did last year (alternative asset management) there was a lot more structure and integration with the rest of the intern group (300+) of us. There were networking events with our divisions, intern social events & set deadlines for us to recap and review with our line managers to ensure we are doing well and are happy.
When we started the internship, at the induction event we were told that other colleagues will invest themselves in us and our development, which to be honest I was a bit cynical about. But they actually do! You can tell they want to train you and see you succeed, which is refreshing and motivating. It makes you want to do well for them!
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. Having a blue chip company behind you, either on your CV or whether you want to reapply to Lloyds as a graduate is really good, and makes you seem far more employable. It shows you have commitment and are of a certain level of intelligence, whether or not this is what you want to do in your future!
The Culture
Yes, the other interns I was placed with at my location were really fun, and there were social events at different points along the 10 weeks, plus networking events with high up colleagues in the company to get your face known and leave an impression. It was really fun!
Cost of living was not too high for me, Lloyds paid for my accomodation as the commute was too far for me, so I just had to pay for food and anything on top. If I needed to travel for work I could expense it, otherwise everything else I paid for myself. Although the Starbucks next door to my work made sure I spent most of my wages there!!!
There wasn't one.
