The Role
I enjoyed my internship thoroughly. The work is varied and interesting, the people that I have met both from Deloitte and fellow students on the internship have all been welcoming and nice, and the socials that have been organised by the company have been varied and fun. My only gripe is that sometimes there is little for me to do or I feel like I am pestering my colleagues for work.
I feel like my colleagues treat me in the same way they treat their fellow colleagues. I do not feel like they look down on me or treat me as if I am more junior than them. My colleagues have been helpful in arranging discussions with their friends and colleagues in order to find out more information about other service lines and all these talks have been useful.
The managers and my supervisors all took the time to talk to me about what I wanted to get out of the internship and I set out some targets for the 5 weeks. I was provided with many lines of support if it were required and have always been sat a few desks away from my supervisor and I feel I can approach them at any time and ask for help or guidance.
Some days I found myself very busy doing tasks for people and producing bits of work. However on others there has been very little for me to do and I had to ask quite a few times whether or not there was anything I could do for people. Obviously, I appreciate that I am not as qualified as others but on the most part I have been kept at a decent level and have not felt overworked.
Although in the initial presentation, we were told that we would be 'treated like first year analysts', I found the work I was doing to bear less responsibility than this. For the most part, I was editing and checking documents as oppose to producing them myself. However, sometimes I was given responsibility in terms of taking ownership of a piece of work.
The skills learnt will have a lot of use once I graduate from university, especially if I go into a similar line of work. I don't feel I have learnt too much that will help me with my degree studies however I have improved my presentation and time management skills and these will be very useful in my university course. Actually doing the internship has also taught me a lot about working life as well.
The Company
For my whole internship, I worked on client site and so I was in an office with 100 or so of my colleagues. This meant that it was very sociable and as everyone works in teams it was nice to sit with them and be able to discuss the work that we were working on. The PMO team did a great job of trying to encourage socialising with snacks etc.
Overall, I would say that it was very well set up, predominantly because they have done it so many times. The first 2 days were introductory activities such as receiving IT training and then for the next 4 weeks and 3 days, we were all assigned to clients and worked on these projects for the entire duration of the programme. I always felt like I knew where I needed to be and always had a contact to ask if I didn't.
No formal training was given as part of the internship except for the initial IT training but I feel that I learnt a lot on the job. This was predominantly technology related skills such as PowerPoint and Excel but also in terms of effective working and improving my presentation skills. I established targets at the start and I accomplished them all, meaning I could see the improvement from start to finish.

Very appealing. For me it's the ideal balance between working hard and being pushed too much. It's well paid for a graduate job and there is plenty of scope for travel. The only issue I have is that, even after 5 weeks of working there, it's very difficult to decide which service line to apply to as you don't get exposure to all of them during the 5 weeks.
The Culture
Yes. During the 5 weeks, I went to around 10 evening social events. These ranged from dinners with other SVS students to project socials. Everyone was very sociable and the events were well organised. We also went to a good variety of places including a bowling alley, a ping pong club, the theatre and numerous restaurants, bars and clubs. Almost the entire SVS scheme attended most of the events.
I lived at home as I can commute into London in about an hour so I never incurred the cost of accommodation, only the cost of travel which was relatively expensive. Lunches were reasonable depending on where you went and I had a few lunches paid for during my scheme. Socialising was very cheap but only because it was all paid for. I didn't buy a single drink at any of the socials but as it was London, I would have thought if it wasn't paid for, it would have been very expensive.
The nightlife was really good and, as I said before, we went to a good variety of bars and clubs. The only problem for me was that I had to catch the last train just after midnight. However, this suited me well as we started the night at 6ish and so it had been a long enough night and also work the next day had to be taken into consideration. The clubs were cool and I really enjoyed the bowling and ping pong bar.
There were for analysts (such as football teams etc.) however for SVS students there wasn't very much to do except for bars and clubs. It would have been nice if there was perhaps some sporting event for the SVS students to participate in during the 5 weeks. There were presentations and tours of the offices for us to attend which were enjoyable however.
