The Role
I really enjoyed this internship because it gave me an insight into a completely new area. I have been studying Computer Science for a long time now and never got a chance to understand the financial markets and its principles. At BlackRock they gave us training sessions on what the company does and a chance to learn from senior level employees directly. I also gained experience on how softwares are developed at such a large scale.
My colleagues never treated like a junior. Whenever I had a problem or question on a certain scenario they were always there not just to help out but also to also guide me in the right direction and provide me with more resources to learn. Whenever I used to do anything wrong instead of criticising me they used to help me figure out why what I had done was wrong and how it could be improved.
I wouldn't have had enjoyed this internship without my supervisor. He was there to help in every scenario. I had never worked in such a huge financial corporation before and did not know how the things were done but with my manager help everything went smoothly. He also gave me a chance to demo the projects I had created to senior level employees.
I was handed a fair amount of work to do and I never felt bored but sometimes I did feel like there were too many HR events which were disrupting my flow of work. Sometimes I did feel like I had a lot of work but then I enjoyed doing what I did there and the work really mattered a lot so it felt good.
When I joined my team I was assigned a task which was not time and consuming or hard to do. I was able to finish this task within a day. I believe this a test to check my capabilities and after that I was handed some crucial projects which would be used by a lot of teams in the future. I would say I was being treated like any other member of the team.
Till now I had been working as a front end developer but working at BlackRock gave me an insight on how back end programming works and how amazing it to code it. I was also able to fully embrace the agile methodology of working in teams. Whatever company I join in the future these skill will easily let me know settle to the environment and let me pick up things very easily.
The Company
The atmosphere was a bit sad since every single time I used to come to the office in the morning I could not see much in the happiness in the people working there. Although a lot of team on the floor were quite amazing and were producing a lot of amazing work and I was lucky to be placed in one of those team. For me I though the department was pretending to be in a tech culture instead of actually trying to implement it.
I would say it was well organised since the day we joined we were being taught how the company's division are organised and the day to day work. After I joined my team I had to go through few training session and few tests before I could actually begin working on my project. I believe this is a great way to for an employee to start with since it prepares him for what is coming ahead.
My manager was alway willing to help me out or explain me how things are done at the company whenever I had a problem or I was stuck at something. I could say the same for everyone else, everyone was very cooperating. Alternative we used to have a lot of other weekly sessions on how the different technologies were used at the company even though we did not used those technologies in our day to day work.
Financial Bonus
The prospects are very appealing at the company since the graduate schemes are really amazing and train the new employee for the upcoming years at the company. The salary is also one of the highest for a graduate to actually earn. BlackRock is the largest asset management company in the world so everyone is really smart at the company.
The Culture
The social scene was good but people used to only socialise with their respected graduate years employees. There used to be weekly events so that people could meet other people from other departments. There were also different cultural societies which organised events based on race or religion which was really great.
The office is based in central London so naturally it was extremely expensive.
