The Role
The actual internship was amazing. I was given real responsibility within my team and was encouraged to share my views. I learnt how collaborative and supportive RBS is and after ten weeks I'm really hoping to gain a place on their graduate scheme.
I was treated as an equal during my time with RBS. I was not treated as inexperienced, my insight was valued and I was allocated work that would directly benefit the team.
My manager was amazing and was always keen to support me during my internship. I was quite independent and keen to learn which obviously helped but she was very supportive in terms of my personal development. She gave me the opportunity to reflect about my career direction and this has given me real clarity about my future.
I was quite busy with a number of projects but there were gaps in between these. This was good I feel as it gave me the opportunity to attend optional events and learn more about the organisation as a whole. I could have been busier, but I understand that my team were exceptionally busy at times so I took the initiative to create extra work for myself by collaborating with different departments which increased my network.
I was given fair responsibility within my team and this included co-running a project with my manager. I was in charge of producing all the documents for these and running meetings and this increased my knowledge and confidence exceptionally quickly. I was also given responsibility on an important project after this and my input was definitely valued in the team. I have left this work with them and am proud to have produced something sustainable for the team.
Taking learning opportunities upon yourself is key on this internship and there are many of these available. The specific intern activities however weren't particularly helpful but good to have anyway. Note that training and skills development does need to come from an inward motivation.
The Company
The atmosphere was professional and friendly and the team were always very supportive and inquisitive as to what others were doing. If anyone had a problem they were always keen to help. I was genuinely surprised by this and this is one of the major factors which has persuaded me to work for RBS.
Organisation was very poor in terms of relocating. We were told we would be supported with 'relocation costs' and moving but this never happened. It did not taint the experience I had in the office but there were many infuriating times.
I took much of this upon myself but if you look for development opportunities you will always readily find them in RBS.
There seems to be a large emphasis on development and movement so I am very attracted by RBS for a future career.
The Culture
The other interns were amazing and they truly made the internship experience. I hope to see many of them on the grad scheme next year!
Reasonable in Edinburgh but as no support was given by RBS to find accommodation, the rent we paid was pretty high. Socialising was good and our teams always encouraged us to make the most of our time on the internship.
The Fringe in Edinburgh meant the nightlife was amazing! Definitely would recommend.
Not particularly but the interns organised activities for themselves.
