The Role
I enjoyed the internship very much. I was able to get an insight into the bank and undertake a variety of tasks. I particularly enjoyed working in teams for my group projects. I learnt how to work with different personalities and divide work effectively. I think the internship was perhaps a bit long and think 8 weeks would have been sufficient to fit in all the relevant work.
My colleagues made me feel welcome and gave me interesting tasks. Everyone I met within the bank was very friendly and gave me advice. I think at times my colleagues were quite busy so did not always have time to talk to me but overall I did feel like I was adding value to my team.
My supervisors gave a satisfactory level of guidance and gave me constructive feedback to help me improve. I liked being independent and approaching my managers when I had something important to ask or tell them.
On a daily basis I was quite busy. I had to do a lot of reading to improve my understanding of my business area. In addition, I had to keep up to date with economic affairs to enable me to write a daily update for US dollar cash markets.
I was given a good amount of responsibility for my area. Since I was on a trading floor, there was only a limited amount of things I could realistically do, as obviously I couldn't book trades. However, I was given a few projects to work on and lead a conference call once a week.
I am will take a lot away from the internship. I have been able to practice my presentation skills and group work which will be useful in any future job. I have also gained confidence with regards to networking.
The Company
The atmosphere was lively and quite upbeat considering it was a trading floor. At times it was hard for me to concentrate on my work due to the noise. However, after a week or so I got used to it and preferred the noise to a deathly silent office.
The organisation was ok. We were only told what placement we had a day before we began working in the offices whilst Line managers were aware of this weekes before. On the other hand, the induction and events throughout were well organised.
We received excel training and were able to shadow various areas of the bank,.
Company Parties/Events
I like the work atmosphere at the bank and appreciate that there are many opportunities for career progression within the bank.
The Culture
I got on very well with the other iterns. We met a couple of times for drinks but since we all lived far away we did not meet up as much as I had hoped we would. It is difficult in London with the city being so big.
It was expensive. But I commuted from home to save some money.
I only went out once or twice so cannot comment much. However, I have heard that there is a lot going on, especially in Shoreditch which is very close by. There is lots of things going on in London so I think it would be nice to work and live in London in the future.
There a few YBA events and networking events but not much apart from that.
