The Role
Overall, the placement was enjoyable. My day to day jobs were not too taxing, but I still felt like I had responsibility and was making a difference.
I felt like a valued member of my team and was encouraged to give feedback during team meetings.
Unknown to me, my manager was on annual leave for the first 3 weeks of my placement. I was left sitting in reception for 2 hours on my first day because I did not have the name of anyone else in my team. I understand that most managers will have been on annual leave at some point during the placement, but I do not think that interns should be placed in teams where the manager is on at leave at the start of the placement, particularly for such a long period. Apart from this, I felt that i could approach my manager with any question and he always took the time to explain.
There were only a handful of days where i was busy all day long. I found it easy to fill the morning with tasks, but tried to fill the afternoons with networking or learning events. This also gave me the time to find out what other people in my team and other areas of the bank did. I would have been grateful for slightly more work
I was responsible for several different things, but if they had gone wrong, there were always people on hand to help me out. I sat beside more experienced colleagues who were always happy to lend a hand.
I feel that my networking improved greatly, as did my confidence in the work place. The group project and report helped with this, as did the positive feedback received from my manager. The training given during the induction week was interesting, but not particularly relevant to my placement.
The Company
The general atmosphere was relaxed and informal. The head of my department would often come to ask me how I was getting along, and there was a lot of friendly interacting between teams. I had the freedom to choose my own working hours and there was never any pressure to out in extra hours at work if they were unnecessary, for the sake of being 'seen' there.
I felt that the placement was not particularly well organised. The recruitment process was quick and efficient,but as soon as i accepted the job, communication dropped rapidly. I feel that it is unacceptable to not tell us that training was in London. This should have been made clear at the assessment centre, or when the job offer was made. To wait until we had signed the contract to tell us felt secretive. I had to seek information on this myself because I was not told. I was also not sent information about the on-boarding portal. There was poor communication about groups for the group project. my group was changed twice.
There were plenty of opportunities to take part in online learning.

I think that I would accept a graduate job if I was worried, but I am concerned about having to liaise with the early careers team.
The Culture
There were plenty of opportunities to socialise with the other interns. However, my work colleagues didn't go out for drinks or socialise outside work. They all ate lunch at their desks.
Edinburgh accommodation is fairly expensive, but not nearly as expensive as London. Travel and socialising is quite cheap and there is a large choice.
There is something on offer for everyone, and the Festival was enjoyable.
The interns organised activities outside of work, but there was nothing organised by RBS.
