The Role
I enjoyed the Technology and Transformations placement greatly. The project I was set (writing an app) was tailored to my skills and personalised. My team were great, really welcoming and made me feel like part of the company from my very first day. I would recommend this placement if you're interested in software development and want to see how devs fit into a finance environment.
I felt like I was placed in a team with people who weren't doing software development so we had a disconnect between our jobs and thus I couldn't take part as much as I would have liked in team strategy meetings etc. However, my colleagues were lovely and I had a great time both professionally and socially getting to know them.
My line manager was good about giving feedback. We had a progress meeting halfway through the placement and he was very good at giving me feedback on both my strengths and weaknesses. All my objectives were SMART and so I felt like I always knew what to do to achieve my objectives.
For the first few weeks I struggled to get the admin rights I needed to start coding, and this kind of bureaucratic setback occurred frequently throughout the internship. As a software developer it is frustrating to wait two weeks to get the permission to install IDEs/packages etc. However, once this problem was overcome I was very busy coding all day. I worked 9-5 and the days flew by.
I had ownership of a brand new project, and was in charge of customer research, design and building of the application. I have never done full-stack development before so this was a steep learning curve, including how to write technical specifications and documentation. I really enjoyed this and to be able to hand over a working application at the end of 10 weeks was a really proud moment for me.
As I mentioned I learned how to see a development project from start to finish, including how to Scrum, the principles of Agile development and how to hand over a piece of software and ensure that it can be used and maintained once I am gone. My coding skills have improved massively, and I learned a few new languages to an intermediate standard whilst here. This has been invaluable and has really improved my CV.
The Company
Chilled out, and friendly. Lots of coffee runs and lunch outings! I got to know my colleagues pretty well and although I was the only young woman on a team of older men they were never anything but friendly and encouraging to me while I found my feet!
I really enjoyed the placement, but I disagreed with the fact that they scrapped the mid-placement event. As interns were spread across the whole country it was very easy to lose touch with both the early careers team and the other interns. Otherwise, the support was great and my project was very enjoyable.
One week training, and lots of help with learning app development. Also access to skillsoft, get abstract and Harvard managementor.
Good, and the grad scheme seems really well supported
The Culture
Very good social scene, and central London was amazing!
V expensive as based in Liverpool street. But excellent location outweighed the cost imo.
Central London! Best nightlife in the country (although I have avoided my bank balance for weeks)
Some, however I mainly stuck to socialising with other interns.
