The Role
My internship with RBS provided me with significant insight into working in a bank. As part of the Technology division, I was given sufficient training prior to entering the office. I was treated as a regular member of the team and was given workload similar to them. Overall, I enjoyed my time with the bank professionally and socially, and am grateful for the opportunity.
My colleagues in the team treated me as a regular member of the team, and gave me workload similar to theirs from day one. The gave me individual feedback for my performance throughout the internship and gave me suggestions for further development, which I personally found to be true and helpful.
My line manager actively introduced himself to me and gave me a brief introduction on the work carried out by the team and how it supports the bank. He was readily available for any queries and uncertainties I faced, taking time off from his schedule and patiently answering my questions. He provided guidance to the work I carried out and provided sufficient support whenever I required it. However, there were times when he was not present in the office and this proved to be a challenge to me in solving the problems I faced.
My typical schedule was 9-5, sometimes staying back in the office a little bit later than usual in order to complete my work. Typically, the first few weeks I was left with close to zero work and carried out mundane tasks, but after gaining better understanding of the programme, I was given greater workload by my manager and team and my schedule started becoming busier over the last few weeks.
During my internship, I was given responsibilities similar to those of my team members and carried out real work which will benefit the company. I believe that this was the best form of training and support that could be given to me as an intern in the business, giving me real-life work experience.
As an engineering student, my skills in analysis and meticulousness proved to be very helpful in this internship, assisting me with task which involved Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint. In terms of how the technical knowledge gained from working with the bank will assist in my studies, I believe it might not be of significant use.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was generally friendly and sociable. They were willing to give professional help and advice, while taking time to joke around and get to know you on a personal basis.
The structure of the internship was great, with direct and efficient steps throughout the process of the internship application. Even throughout the period of the internship, there was listening lunches and training sessions given to us just as well.
They bank gave significant training and invested a significant amount of time and money to all the interns.

Promising, and diverse.
The Culture
There was a good social scene within all the interns, but not really amongst the colleagues.
I was based in London, and essentially the cost of living in this area is generally high.
London is packed with bars and clubs all over the city.
Yes there were, particularly for the graduate and internship programmes, giving us social and charity work to carry out during the time here.
