The Role
I enjoyed different aspects of the internship but disliked others. I enjoyed working with other interns on the presentation as well as writing an individual report. However I felt that I was not given enough responsibility and was often without work. I spent the majority of the time shadowing colleagues which although interesting, did not make me feel like a valuable member of the team.
Being part of a large team meant I didn't spend as much time with some people as others. The people I did spend time with, shadowing, I enjoyed and they made me feel welcome. Towards the end of the internship a lot more people knew who I was and would ask questions about my progress which was nice.
My manager would assign me to different areas for shadowing everyday but as far as guidance was concerned there wasn't much, but there didn't need to be. She helped me as much as she could with the limited information about the internship, report and presentation that she had been given. So despite the fact there was not a huge amount of guidance, any questions I had she would try to answer them as best she could.
I spent a huge amount of time on the internship shadowing which meant that often I didn't have work to do. Some members of the team would give me little jobs to do which really helped keep me busy considering I often felt like I was at a loose end. I think this was mainly due to being in such a technical role where i couldn't be let loose on the systems.
I did a huge amount of shadowing on the internship which involved seeing different departments and working with lots of different employees. Although it was interesting to learn about different systems and applications, I would have much rather spent some time doing work. Had I been set an individual project to focus on for the internship I would have been a lot busier and held more responsibility. As it was I only had responsibility for myself and the odd bit of work set by team members.
In the induction week there was three days of training. This involved one day of excel training and two days of technical industry training. This training will definitely help in future jobs and studies especially the excel training will help with university work. As far as skills gained on the internship itself there are none. I have gained knowledge of how the technology of the bank works which is very interesting and will help in future roles.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was mixed. Some people enjoyed having a bit of banter and talking to me whilst others stuck to themselves and didn't socialise much.
The internship was poorly organised from my point of view. The induction week was well organised but once I arrived in the office there seemed to be a huge lack of communication between the managers and HR. Often managers didn't know what interns were meant to be working on.
The Culture
Amongst interns there was a great social scene. Every weekend interns were meeting up to go out or do tourist activities in Edinburgh.
N/A lived at home
Nightlife was like any other city. Good variety of clubs and bars, especially in the Fringe.
