The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. RBS is a great company to work for and there were lots of opportunities to learn and get involved with the work going on in the bank.
I felt part of the team and there was always support when I needed it.
My line manager was away on holiday for 5 weeks and my second line manager was away for 2 weeks. Therefore, there was inconsistency in the management which made it difficult to get the right guidance and support for the work I was given.
Time management was never a problem at RBS. I felt I was in control of all my deliverables.
I was responsible for my own deliverables however a chance to take on more tasks would have aided my development.
I not only obtained and developed technical and soft skills but also realised what skills and knowledge I would need for the future. This has given me direction for my studies and beyond.
The Company
It wasn't Google but working at RBS was never dull. It was a very dynamic environment with lots of opportunities to learn. Everyone was very friendly and approachable.
At the very start, I thought it was very disorganised as I had no idea where to go on the first day. I would have expected an email with the details on the first day. However, I had to go out of my way to find out where I was going. RBS HR were also very late in organising the intern project teams. Given that RBS is a very large organisation, I would have expected the HR department to be more organised and imaginative with the structure of the internship. However, this was not the case in my experience.
Very good at the start of the intern, but I never felt prepared for my placement. I would have expected more specialised training rather being left to figure out for myself.
The grad scheme seems like a great opportunities.
The Culture
I made many good friends in my department. However, I felt very "siloed". I would have liked an opportunity to socialise with interns from other departments.
My placement was in London. Therefore I expected the cost of living and socialising to be quite high.
If you like house music, you're going to have a great time.
Very few. In London, there weren't any opportunities to get involved in sport.
