The Role
I felt like the work was not only useful to the team but, gave me an insight into the real world functions and activities of the bank. This was for both long term goals and targets of the bank. The team around me were very proactive in encouraging progress in my learning development.
I felt trusted and valued within the team, being given work daily to contribute to ongoing projects and reporting work. I was trusted with far more responsibility than i was expecting and regularly had meetings with my line manager and other colleagues to ensure that the work was progresses at a good rate.
I was given guidance by not only my line manager but other colleagues within the team as well as senior members of staff. The flat hierarchical structure enables communication with colleagues in different positions and enables a greater understanding of the running of the bank.
There were notably busy times as well as times where there was less to do. Throughout, there wasn't any extended period of time where I had nothing to do. If there was no large piece of work to be done, there is always additional reading/research to be done as well as work to be completed on individual projects and reports.
Far more than I expected! I was trusted by both my colleagues and my line manager, something that I was not expected to as large a degree as I was expecting.
Technical skills wise, this is a hard aspect to assess after just 10 weeks but, I definitely picked up valuable skills regarding day to day running of the bank and the etiquette within the workplace.
The Company
A very friendly atmosphere to work in. I never, form day one, felt uncomfortable with anyone or that I was an outsider. Being a temporary member of a team, it was important for me to build relationships quickly, communicating with a number of different areas and teams and this was made easy by the approachability of the employees.
The lead up to the internship was great, communication from HR Early Careers was regular and concise, clearly outlining the requirements of us in the run up to the start. The induction week was useful and provided insight as to the structure of the programme and this was continued throughout with regular learning calls taking place.
Subsidised/Company Gym
It is an exciting time within the bank, things are changing and it seems to be a great working atmosphere, striving to improve.
The Culture
In London, everything is more expensive than other cities and towns so, just more expensive.
My place of work was near Shoreditch and Hoxton as well as St Pauls etc, so plenty of places to go out and socialise.
