The Role
The work and environment were both very enjoyable. Several events were also put on weekly for all of the interns, bringing them together in a single place to relax and allowing them to discuss what they had been doing over the week.
Contributions and suggestions made towards projects were all considered seriously by the team, and efforts were made to introduce me to as many full time and senior employees as possible
A buddy and manager were assigned to provide assistance and answers to questions which it was not felt were suitable for my manager. My manager also provided feedback and suggestions for all work that was submitted to him, as well as after meetings
The work load varied during the internship due to external delays on some of the projects. In order to compensate for this, additional work was found elsewhere withing the bank
I was responsible for running a proof of concept pilot, involving interfacing with customers internal to the bank, as well as third party contractors and software vendors independently
Some of the training received during the first week was quite low level given my degree discipline, however other aspects of it were of a very high standard - such as the financial training which in two hours covered everything that had been covered in a term at university
The Company
The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, one of the teams were usually joking around with each other a lot helping to foster a relaxed atmosphere
There were a few problems on the first day regarding login accesses, however they were quickly rectified by my manager
The company sent me to a training course at IBM to further aid in my work, and provide a greater understanding of the products which i was using
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I was offered a place on their graduate scheme at the end of my internship
The Culture
Every other friday night we would all have drinks together at one of the banks events and would then all go out somewhere else together after
As the majority of the events occurred in london, activities we arranged ourselves weren't the cheapest every. However, the social events arranged by the bank were free, including drinks and food
London.... Pretty much something for everyone, and always people out
There was a touch rugby team which had a tournament towards the end of the placement, as well as a 5k run. There was also a basket ball team
