The Role
I enjoyed the latter weeks of my internship much more than the early weeks of the internship, however it improved as the time progressed.
Colleagues were very supportive, plenty of team events and felt really welcome. Work I did was valued and made a real contribution to the team.
Manager was away for almost half of my internship, so it was difficult to ask him for support. Other people within office were supportive but had to be pro-active in seeking out help.
Had to pro-actively look for work rather than being given enough, but there was plenty to go around.
Was given a very good level of responsibility. Made first contact with customers, directly involved in client meetings, work I completed made a real contribution to the functioning of the office.
Skills learned were more personal than technical. Learned how to chase work / be proactive rather than vast amount of technical knowledge gained. Will give good general background to working cross industry.
The Company
General office experience was very strange. Team had just changed and employees were getting used to new role. Lead to some tensions and difficulties as an intern and rotating teams. Generally supportive and fun, but atmosphere felt strained.
Placement organisation was poor. Didnt find out office location until the week before, Line Manager was away for 3.5 out of 10 weeks of internship. Few social events set up during internship by RBS led to limited networking opportunities. CSR and Internship Project worked well
Training week was excellent, of a high standard with very engaging teachers. Buddy system worked really well and buddies provided support throughout internship. Training during internship was limited, although there were limited workshops and sessions.
Depends on the person. For me, not great. Most jobs in the roles i would consider are being shut down by the company. However, could be fantastic for the right person. Definitely chance for progression after the internship
The Culture
Other interns organised lots of social events, but almost none organised by HR. Social scene very much what you make of it.
Internship was in London, so cost of living and socialising high, but that was to be expected.
Great - internship was based in London and lots of places to go during the internship with other graduates.
There were limited opportunities. Team regional events and other activities occurred, but only 2 or 3 times during internship. More than none.
