The Role
Learnt a lot about the business area I was put in, however there was no option to choose the area. Met loads of people from different backgrounds - both interns and colleagues, which was the main highlight of the experience.
Some colleagues felt that as an intern you aren't capable / can be trusted with certain jobs, so there was a lot of shadowing to begin with. I was mainly doing work for my manager, so the rest of the team weren't involved much in what I was doing.
Initially, my line manager was away for 2 weeks, meaning objectives were hard to set and I wasn't able to start proper work until week 3 in the office, and my manager was working from home a fair amount. However I was supported when my manager was in the office, and given constructive feedback.
There would be some days where I would be extremely busy, and others where I'd have close to no work to do. However I enjoyed the aspect of having a presentation, individual report and a CSR project to complete, as this would keep me busy if there wasn't much else going on.
I was given a good deal of responsibility by my line manager in terms of the projects I was set to complete by the end of the 10 weeks, as the organisation are aiming to use some of the things I produced, in the future.
The business area I was in was very specific, therefore I only solely learnt about products in this area - so in terms of using what I learned in any job in the future, this is unlikely. However I developed vital transferable skills including networking skills and organisational skills.
The Company
My floor was very big, and it seemed as if a lot of people knew each other. Due to having hot desks, there was the opportunity to meet a lot of people which was great. Obviously there were more quiet times at points of the day.
Communication was a problem across all areas of the placement, especially in terms of what business area we would be in - we only found this out a couple of days before we began.
The first training / induction week was great. It gave us all the opportunity to meet each other and learn about the business in general, as well as learn some vital skills.
The employees are always willing to help, so they are great to work with. However I do hope to experience other areas within the organisation.
The Culture
Graduates regularly organised grad/intern drinks which was also a great chance to meet new people and make contacts within the organisation.
London is very expensive in terms of both going out and accommodation.
