The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship this summer. At the beginning not knowing what it would be like I/we were all very nervous. But the department I was assigned to made my feel very welcome. Between the combination of challenging work and great colleagues I highly recommend future interns to look at J.P. Morgan.
It's always a challenge to add value to your team when you're with a company for so little time. However, in saying this its not impossible. The projects that I carried out worth both appreciated and used by my colleagues and seniors, and in some cases my MD.
There was never any issue in approaching my manager or any colleague in that matter. If there was something you were unsure about or needed some clarity all you had to do was ask. In some cases your managers and colleagues need some support from you, so you're not the only one that's asking.
To be honest, its all dependent on how much effort you're willing to put in. I started the internship with the mentality that I will get out as much as I put in. Before starting my manager had assigned me two-three projects to work on during my stay but there were times were I was waiting for feedback and had a spare moment, so I took the opportunity to offer a helping hand to my manager with some of the deadlines he was working on. So yes, there was always work to be done.
My responsibility was based on my performance throughout my internship. As I was able to demonstrate my capability I was given more responsibility in the work I did.
I think this has to be the one area I highly rank at J.P. Morgan. The facilities they have to ensure your constant development. This answer is two fold. Firstly, on the job learning. You're constantly faced with new challenges, each with different ways to solve them. Some lessons that I've learnt I will definitely be able to take back to my final year of uni. Secondly, are the training facilities J.P. Morgan have. If there's any area you're interested in then its very easy to read about.
The Company
There was a great atmosphere in the office I worked. I say great because there was a combination of friendliness and a real motivation to work hard. That combination made it easier for me to get on with my work but at the same time maintain a balance.
I was very impressed with the HR team that put our internship program together. They were very understanding of allowing us to get on with our work and organizing events to develop ourselves as well as help develop our futures (Networking).
Within my department there was always something to be learnt. So every few weeks there were training courses to be learnt and understood. In addition to this, they organized a Global Speaker Series Event, where they got some of the more senior figures in the firm (Jamie Dimon, Paul Compton etc) to chat and answer questions from interns around the world.
Sports and Social Club
Extremely appealing! I know exactly where I want to work now, and I know with my ambition I will get there. J.P. Morgan is a phenomenal company to work for. There are always opportunities at your door step.
The Culture
One thing that was incredible was the diversity that we had this year. not only from different uni's within the UK, but internationally! French, Canadian, American, Chinese, Brazilian, Mauritian, Zimbabwean & Nigerian. It's all about building your network.
