The Role
The overall experience was really good. There were great opportunities to meet new people, gain a better understanding of some of the divisions in the bank and undergo projects that you wouldn't do in normal university life.
I felt like I was definitely valued by the wider team who felt able to give me the responsibility to do work on their behalf. There was a good working atmosphere within the team and they always respected by opinions and thoughts on potential recommendations.
My manager was based in Edinburgh while I was located in London and so I only saw him face to face for a few weeks, although we spent a lot of time on the phone. However, he was very helpful and we managed to build in my opinion a good relationship. It also encouraged me to use other contacts in London rather than just my manager which was ultimately beneficial as it enabled me to meet new people.
This varied from week to week. Sometimes I had to work overtime to complete the work but as most of it was project based there were times when I felt I didn't have much to do.
I was given great responsibility: my main individual project focused on a task that the team had looked into before but to no avail. By the end I produced a slide pack on the task illustrating the challenges and potential benefits and fellow colleagues, after I presented to them, acknowledged the fact that they should look into this further in the future.
The communication skills I have gained can be used in all environments and the chance to meet so many new people, both peers and senior managers has been a great experience. I haven't learnt that much technical knowledge that I can transfer as the division is quite specific and I don't think i will pursue it in the future. Nonetheless other skills such as project management have been very valuable and something I can use when undergoing my dissertation in my final year of university,
The Company
Really good atmosphere
There was confusion with my internship as many thought I was supposed to be based in Edinburgh rather than London. Also I had a lot of trouble getting my NIACS card sorted.
They invested a lot of time and resources in me
The Culture
I managed to make many friends during the placement.
Cost of living was very expensive but the social aspect was very good
Very good
Not really from my viewpoint
