The Role
My internship experience was excellent. For a university student in their first corporate job I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to what is to come after university. It can sometimes be intimidating to think of ending university and starting to work in a company. How will people treat you there? Am I ready for this? On my RBS internship I realised it is not that big of a deal. They have made me confident about diving into the corporate world.
My colleagues and specially my line manager was always ready to give me feedback and guide me thorugh the process of the internship. They do not expect you to know every single technical aspect of your role ad they made it clear from the beginning. My team was like a family to me: organising socials, making sure I understod everything, and engaging me in their conversations. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
My manager mentored me in every way possible. He understood that as an intern you're not meant to have a perfectly clear idea of what you want to work in and allowed me to work shadow various departments within the bank in order to make my mind up. He was an understanding person.
I was given a good amount of responsibility from the start which made me feel valued and engaged in the business. However, it was not a case of me not having time or being stressed at work,
My manager trusted me and my skills, giving me responsibility from the beginning. They did not assign me with "left-over" tasks.
It did help with my organisational and people management skills.
