The Role
The team I worked in - Building & Commercial Services, was extremely supportive and helpful. The job was challenging at times and kept me busy all throughout my placement. I've improved my general business skills, such as time management, communication or prioritising, but I also developed more business- specific abilities - mastering database administration, e-marketing, advertising and building customer relationships.
The team me feel valued and fully appreciated. You are encouraged to challenge your shortcomings and you are rewarded for delivering good results.
I could ask as many questions as I felt a need to but at the same time, they gave me space to actually try to do things by myself. At 3M the support is always there if you need it, you only need to ask questions.
Extremely busy at times, but generally a good working balance. Personally, I worked a bit more than needed but that was my own choice. If you are looking for a placement where you want to learn as much as possible and you are a hard-worked, this place will definitely meet your expectations.
You are gradually given more and more responsibilities. If your managers see you are doing well, you will be given more challenging projects even from the very beginning. At the same time though, if you feel like you are struggling , just shout and you will be given the support you need. What's great is that you can run your own projects and learn to manage all the aspects of the job yourself.
The skills you develop over the 12-month placement at 3M creates a very comprehensive base for a graduate position within any company.

You usually need to go though the graduate recruitment process anyway, but your manager gives references to HR and may create a job post especially for you.
The Culture
Slightly too much work in my department to actually have lunch with students every day, but some other departments were not as busy. Once a month there is a night out for mainly graduates and placement students, a good way to meet new people and find out more about graduate positions.
I lived in Bracknell, where 3M has its headquarters hence I saved a lot of money and time on commuting. I've changed houses 2 times during my placement; rent per month varied between £400 + bills and £320 all inclusive.
In Bracknell there is literally nothing fun do to apart from a cinema and bowling centre, but it's very close to work (skipping all the traffic jams and getting more lie-ins!). Reading is near by though, with some pretty good clubs.
Many sports clubs, gym, charity work and various one-off events.
