The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my 12 weeks at CRUK. They were an invaluable learning experience, allowing be to grow in both confidence and ability as a result of being part of a truly dynamic and inspiring team. From sourcing some great prizes for some really exciting events, to volunteering at the special events themselves, the breadth and depth of this intern position led to a number of personal achievements in a variety of areas.
I felt truly valued, appreciated and supported by all of my colleagues. Everyone was warm, approachable and genuinely considerate. Nothing was too much trouble, and everyone was genuinely interested in my personal development and helping me to get the most out of the internship. The work ethic was great and everyone within my team was genuinely passionate about what they were doing. It truly was like being part of a very happy family.
I was given excellent support and guidance by my manager, Holly. Her management style was second to none, as she was approachable and made me feel totally at ease. Nothing was ever a problem and we had weekly 121 catch ups, where she covered all the bases, from personal development to workload issues. She constantly sent me really helpful documents and feedback, intended to help with my development and fulfilment within my role.
Very often the 9-5 seemed to fly by. At times the pace was quite slow, but this was always rectified when I used my initiative and offered my time to anyone on the team who required my help. My manager was always extremely conscientious about my workload, ensuring that I was challenged and stimulated but not inundated and out of my depth.
I was given a great amount of responsibility and this was facilitated by my own ability and conscientiousness. My manager and other senior colleagues all fed back to me that they were happy to delegate important tasks, as they knew that it would get done on time and in the correct format.
My ability to communicate with clients (or supporters in this case) has been improved to no end - as a Drama student this internship has helped to further my confidence in presenting to and conversing with large groups of senior clients and colleagues. Project and time management will help for any job in the future, and my persuasive ability has improved no end, which would help in any competitive professional capacity.
The Company
Friendly, relaxed and laid back. Everyone was approachable and chatty. Open plan office space meant that everyone was easy to locate and speak to.
Really well organised - it was an intake of 48 and they had great personal development opportunities, including CV and Interview Workshops.
Definitely. We were given a huge amount of guidance and feedback. We had big reviews structured by the intern coordinator every 2 weeks with our managers. We were encouraged to send feedback when necessary and we were given personal development online courses and a whole day dedicated to CV and Interview training.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Relatively appealing, certainly something I would consider.
The Culture
Yes there definitely was a strong social scene amongst fellow placement students, and lots of events/activities to get involved in.
Definitely at the top end, as it was in central London (zone 1).
In London as a whole, really great. However during my placement my experience of the nightlife was somewhat limited.
Yes definitely - lots cantered around the charity ie. our big DNA trail which raised £2,000 for the Frances Crick Institute!
