    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my role and the tasks I completed on a daily basis . I really like J.P. Morgan as a company and there were lots of events organised both internally and externally both during the day and after work. Graduate Recruitment organised events, there tended to be one or two a week. Then my division organised events for the interns, such as training and networking lunches and breakfasts (to some extent these sorts of events vary on what division you sit it). The interns also organised informal events after work such as drinks or meals. Overall, it is a very well organised internship and it is clear that the company puts a lot of energy into ensuring the interns have a good 10 weeks.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I had really good feedback throughout the internship from my team on the various projects I was working on. I found everyone I met at the company friendly and very helpful during the 10 weeks.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very approachable so I had the opportunity to gain feedback whenever I needed it. The internship scheme also structures more formal reviews throughout the 10 weeks so feedback can be communicated with HR. It is also easy to communicate with more senior employees, such as Executive Directors and Managing Directors, who I found likewise were approachable and helpful in providing advice. J.P. Morgan also organises a Buddy Scheme and Senior Advisor Scheme. These are useful to meet people in different positions within the company and learn about areas you wouldn't otherwise have exposure to.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had a few different projects to work on over the summer so I always had something to do. The amount of work varied on a daily basis depending on updates from other employees involved in the projects I was working on or if I was given ad-hoc work to complete. I'm someone who likes to be busy, so if I'd had more work/ been more busy I would not of found it an issue.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship my tasks varied. Some projects would be communicated with just my team but others went to more senior audiences such as the Senior Managers meeting. At first I was concerned that I wouldn't get that much responsibility or independent work, but once I had started on a few projects, I was soon setting up meetings and attending them without supervision for my own projects.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My role was quite analytical, so the skills to easily summarise and highlight key information and data will prove useful in the future. Also, I got a lot of exposure to the business, so I definitely picked up a lot of technical knowledge about the industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is very relaxed. Sometimes it would be busier/ louder but as the placement is over the Summer, people tended to be on their annual leave, so there were periods where it was very quiet.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement is very well organised by Graduate Recruitment. There were a lot of events, both educational, networking and social. My Division also set up events for the interns. The feedback system is also well organised with mid-internship and end of inter-ship reviews with your manager and HR. I also had an end of internship presentation to the other interns and managers- this depended on what team you sit in as some interns didn't do one and others only presented to their team.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The training you get depends on what division you sit with. Investment Banking and other functions get a week of training at the start whereas I went straight into work after the first day introduction. My division organised training sessions for the interns throughout the Summer. There is also online training which must be completed.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Flexibility and mobility are promoted in the firm, a lot of employees seem to rotate around. Future employment at J.P. Morgan definitely appeals to me.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, but this may vary with the division you are sat in. My division were very sociable so people were always organising events after work. I didn't see much of interns from other departments but there were a couple of events organised by graduate recruitment that bought everyone together.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London, so it is expensive. I'm a student in London so this made no difference to me as I already had accommodation over the Summer.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf and London in general have great vibes in the evening. There's lots of different bars to visit after work.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The Buddy scheme set up some events outside of work. My team and the other interns also organised events out of the office. There is the opportunity to get involved in sports teams, but I felt the 10 weeks didn't really provide enough time to do that. There is also an intern team for the Corporate Challenge race but places filled up very quickly.
