The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the internship, and learned the most I possibly could in 8 weeks. All the other interns were great people, and we had a lot of laughs throughout. Thrown in the deep end somewhat, but everyone at the firm has no issues with giving you their time and answering any questions that you may have.
Support and guidance was excellent. The internship kicked off with a week's training, where you acquired knowledge that was pretty much used at one point or another throughout the internship. Furthermore, before each new project we had an "initial thoughts" group session where we would discuss our ideas with a senior member of Fidelity. We also had several one on one sessions with coaches who would offer guidance and the opportunity for us to ask any questions about the task we wanted.
You're as busy as you want to be - the nature of the work means that you can always do more, so not having enough work is definitely not an issue and you don't have to worry about being sat at your desk for hours being bored. Furthermore, nobody is watching the hours you're putting in, just the output - i.e the quality of your projects. So, if you find yourself being unproductive relatively early in the evening and can't see yourself having any new ground-breaking ideas nobody is expecting you to stay at your desk and there is no advantage in doing so.
Not particularly relevant to my degree, coming from a non-finance background, but I have certainly gained skills for life, especially considering that I am pursuing a career in this field. You can't put a price on the commercial awareness and financial modelling skills gained. I now feel like I have a firm grasp on what the city is all about and what a city career truly entails.
The Company
Had a lot of fun with the interns, and a good amount of tea/lunch breaks were had! In terms of the full time employees, people do tend to get on with their own work a lot of the time (in silence) - however people tend to meet for lunches together and there are social events e.g equity research pizza and beer nights/book club etc.
Exceptionally well organised - really couldn't fault it. It is really well structured in the sense that it gives you the best learning experience and opportunity to progress, with each project being incrementally harder than the last, providing new challenges along the way, whilst enabling you to utilise everything you have learned so far in the prior projects.
I was really impressed with the extent to which Fidelity invested in interns. I doubt at other firms you will have ex star fund managers scheduling time with you so you can talk through your ideas on a stock during your second week at the company! They really care about your overall experience too, with HR scheduling time with you to talk through how you are finding the internship every couple of weeks also.
Company Parties/Events
They offered a substantial number of interns graduate positions, and I was lucky enough to be one of them. I am looking forward to returning come september 2016.
The Culture
Had a great time with the fellow interns, whether it was during events scheduled by the company itself or events we organised amongst ourselves. A few memorable nights out were had!
What you'd expect from central London, however costs are manageable if you know where to go.
Can't beat London Nightlife!
There were a few opportunities organised by the company in regard to out of work activities - however most of the out of work activities that I got up to were organised by myself and the other interns.
