The Role
The internship involved a number of socials & networking events. Day to day you complete admin tasks, attend client meetings. Every Friday you complete a weekly stock pitch as well as an Intern quiz to test how many people you know across the floor & if you are up to date with current news.
The staff are extremely busy doing their jobs, so it is good to book 10 mins away from the desk to have meaningful conversations. The more you put in to the staff the more you get out.
Managers are extremely busy so grabbing time for feedback can be challenging - you just need to be persistent. Some managers set projects / tasks for interns, others let interns create their own projects depending on their interests.
In general extremely busy mainly due to multiple staff giving you admin jobs and you having to juggle deadlines. Also balancing the work you have taken on with client meetings, social events etc.
It varies according to the desk. In markets the responsibility you can take is limited. Completing accounts as well as preparing morning / afternoon update emails for you team's clients is probably the most responsibility to expect.
You learn how to use Bloomberg and I managed to pick up excel skills along the way. Each desk is very niche so the skills learnt are limited to applying elsewhere. But the soft skills / being used to a performance driven environment are very valuable.
The Company
Most of the team are so busy and have little time to talk. They are more than less open to take questions. Most people were friendly, but the working atmosphere is extremely team dependent.
The organisation prior to the internship is good. You know your manager & what desk you are assigned to. Whilst on the internship the organisation is ok. You have a schedule of presentations from senior staff, networking events.
You are provided with a week of training (across asset classes) during the first week of the internship. You also have an afternoon at Bloomberg for training. Other than that, desk specific training occurs on the job - the more you put in the more you get out.
Sports and Social Club
Overall they are appealing but no more than other opportunities on the street.
The Culture
The interns were good fun and most are very friendly. People would go out a couple of times a week.
Canary Wharf - cost of living varies some people live at home & commute, others rent flatshares. Canary Wharf isn't the cheapest of places but you have All Bar One & the Slug & Lettuce which are standard drinking places.
Most people head to the city for more nightlife.
This is team dependent. Some managers are keen to socialise with interns outside of work, others aren't as fussed. HR organise a corporate social responsibility day where you volunteer for a local cause - usually tidying a woodland or something. This is followed by a social.
