The Role
I greatly enjoyed my internship with BAE Systems Naval Ships. The management and HR were very accommodating and I feel I have left with a vast knowledge of the business.
As an intern I expected myself to take on filler jobs and roles, that wouldn't add much value to the team. However, the work I was assigned to do is of and will be of a great importance to the team I worked in, which makes me feel quite valued by my colleagues. I attended meetings and my inputs were considered and adapted as well.
I asked tones and of questions and my managers were always more than willing to help out and answer my queries regardless of how busy they were. I felt greatly supported and was pushed to extend my objectives and expand my understanding of the business.
I kept myself busy, the work given to me wasn't hectic but I looked for work around and also took on a stretch assignment which meant my days were fairly busy.
I helped organise the summer intern conference, which held a great deal of responsibility. Over 12 weeks there isn't much that you can take on with full responsibility but I feel satisfied with the work load and content of work I dealt with.
The chance to work in industry was very valuable. It has improved my people skills, understanding of how big engineering projects work and improved my managerial and networking skills. These are sure to assist me carry out my future projects with greater professionalism and skill.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very professional as we worked alongside the Ministry of Defence who were our customers.
The initial process of the internship was very well set up. I struggled to get support from the HR on certain occasions, but my line manager ensured I got the most out of my placement.
My line manager ensured I travelled to other parts of the business to get a wider appreciation of the work the other departments did. I also attended a training course for a software, and I feel I was well invested in.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Extremely good. Specially for Systems Engineers and Project Managers. The organisation is looking to invest in these vacancies and see a high demand for it in the coming years.
The Culture
The social scene wasn't too great. The organisation didn't hold any events themselves.
The cost of living in the area I worked in was relatively cheaper than central Bristol.
No nightlife. The nightlife was all in the central Bristol area.
I helped organise the Summer Intern Conference which was different to the work I was initially set to do. There weren't any other opportunities.
