The Role
I really enjoyed my vacation scheme placement! At the start it was very daunting going into a busy department and then having tasks given to you to be done by a certain deadline. However I did learn something from each task which is the main thing and had a friendly department to help me if I had any questions.
Everyone was so friendly in the property department! I really did feel welcome and was able to talk to people in the department - especially when I had my own desk alongside the corridor so I could talk to people who walked past.
My supervisor was amazing! She made me feel welcome and I knew I could ask her anything if I got stuck on anything. I really felt as though she wanted me to do well and cared about me which was nice and at the end of the week we had a ten minute chat about the week and she said I did very well which was definitely a relief!
I did have quite a few tasks to manage as well as a research task which had a deadline. I got the tasks throughout the day which took me a long time to complete so at the start of the week I was worried about when I could get the time to complete my research report (was staying in a hotel with no internet!) I did have to stay until 7 one night to print off research so I could spend a few hours on it on the night time. Luckily I didnt get any tasks one day so I spent all day on my report which I was happy about and that lowered the stress levels dramatically! Overall I think it was a good balance as being busy is better than having nothing to do!
I did get the tasks mentioned above which some were to help clients and so was a big responsibility. I did not get to sit in on any client meetings which would have been nice but I did get a lot of responsibility for a vacation student!
It definitely gave me the insight I needed into a commercial firm. I learnt different skills from my tasks such as the layout of a lease and main skills such as organisation and time management.
The Company
Everyone was lovely and easy to talk to which made the atmosphere very good.
We had a set timetable containing an induction, two assessments and then department time as well. I think the time for each was perfect (a lot in the department rather than assessments!) and it was well organised.
Members on the property team did invest time into explaining the tasks to me when they were busy also which showed that they were investing in me!
Company Parties/Events
I really want to work there! Lovely firm, its just the competition is tough! But if I dont get it, I shall keep trying!
The Culture
I went out on the wednesday night with all the vacation scheme students and the trainees which was a good night! We had a pool tournament and they provided the food and drinks which is always a good thing! The bad thing was that we all had to be in work for 9 the next day! But definitely a good informal night to get to know everyone. Also we went out for a quick drink with the trainees on the friday night to say goodbye which was nice.
Well I cant speak for the sococialising part of the question (the drink!) because it was on the firms tab so I have no idea how much it cost! I had to stay in a hotel for a week which was £25 a night and I had to get a takeaway every night because the hotel didnt do food - so food was quite expensive for me!
Got a good feel to it, I didnt have a big night out there but Leeds seems like a good city.
As above, two nights out with the trainees and vacation scheme students.
