The Role
I enjoyed the variety of work I was tasked with and the level of responsibility I was given was challenging whilst I never felt out of my depth. Someone was always on hand to offer guidance and support where needed. Long working hours, pressure to meet deadlines and working outside whatever the weather was certainly not easy but felt rewarding once achieved.
I felt like I was a key part of the team, holding a significant responsibility and helping liaise between sub-contractors and high level management. Also I was influential in key decisions and events.
Always felt supported by those both on site and in the site office, and my project manager was particularly helpful whatever the issue.
Very busy most days due to the fast pace of the project, occasionally when work was slower it wasn't too much of a problem as there was often something interesting happening on site.
I was given a large amount of responsibility straight away which at first seemed daunting but within a few weeks I was used to it and enjoyed being a valued employee.
The work was quite a bit different to what I learn in lectures, but it was certainly valuable getting experience of site work and broadening my competencies as an engineer. I learnt a lot about construction and the workings of the industry that is not possible to experience sat in a lecture theatre. Also the work gave me an appreciation of construction that I can then apply to design work in future.
The Company
On the whole people were friendly and helpful, but the highly stressed nature of site work creates a lot of conflict, thankfully I didn't get too caught up in things but the negative atmosphere was slightly off putting at times.
Really well organised, I was supported straight away and always felt a valued member of the site team.
Took part in health and safety courses, computer software courses and was also trained as a fire marshal.
Company Parties/Events
I was offered a scholarship and a place on the graduate scheme but I turned this down due to wanting to broaden my engineering experiences first before committing to a role in contracting straight away.
The Culture
Often went out for curries, drink etc. Staff Christmas party was good and well organised. Not so many young people in the industry so there was a bit of an age gap but that doesn't really bother me so much.
Bath is fairly expensive but not ridiculous.
Bath is a small town but with a large student population, always something going on and Bristol is nearby if you're in need of a change.
No real extra curricular activities, site hours are long and people commute from all over so there wasn't much appetite for it.
