The Role
I enjoyed it a lot. Great work/life balance. Friendly and helpful colleagues.
My manager was always there to help me if I got stuck. I didn't feel afraid to ask him questions, even if I suspected they might be somewhat self-evident.
Some days I would work quite a bit, some others less but I would be the one who chose my pace which was great.
I wasn't working on mission critical components but I still wrote code which might find its way into actual company products or internal tools.
It was my first encounter with production environments, large codebases and others real-world aspects of software development.
The Company
Most people would work hard thorough the day and there would be the occasional quips and small jokes but nothing major. However, even though people are working you are welcome to go to them an chat for a couple of minutes.
The entire process went quite smoothly as far as administration goes. I had to fill in 2 forms with HR and that was all I had to do to get started on my internship. Every intern gets placed in a team which suits them and we received all the assistance we needed. Events were organised specifically for interns in addition to the constant stream of things to do alongside full time employees.
I had a personal development plan. My manager would hold a personal meeting every week to track my progress and ask me about my experience at the company. I was always given help when I needed it and never felt like nobody cared what I did.

Company Parties/Events
Great company. Very interesting, friendly and fun people. Great work/life balance.
The Culture
It took some time to get the ball rolling but once we got to know each other I became good friends with quite a few other interns.
Well it's London so going out can be a bit steep, but because there are company houses it is actually quite cheap and easy to organise house parties. Also the company provides drinks every time someone joins or leaves (even interns) so there are drinks almost every week.
A couple of pubs but not much more.
Sports, games, charity. MetaSwitch has it all.
