The Role
I can honestly say my internship at Dyson is the first job I have ever enjoyed. Of course I would have rather been enjoying a summer holiday... but all of the work I was involved with was incredibly interesting and varied.
I was part of an incredibly friendly team during my placement. In fact, everyone around the office was extremely friendly and helpful. Not once did I experience any tension between employees in the work place. There is a young, fun atmosphere in the office and everyone has something interesting about them. Despite everyone being very clever and ambitious, no one seemed to take themselves too seriously and consequently it was very easy to fit in.
The amount of training for new starters is unbelievable. Your first three weeks is almost entirely spent bringing you up to speed with everything about the business. The training continues throughout the placement making sure you are able to do anything a Dyson employee needs to do - the level of investment is incredible. I was given a desk next to my manager, who was also extremely helpful, answering anything and everything I asked. Compared to previous placements where I would have been lucky to see my manager for 5 minutes each day, I was given an enormous amount of support and guidance.
Not once was I thinking I didnt have enough to do. Of course some tasks are more fun than others but there was always something to be getting on with. The projects I was involved with were very well thought out so that there was enough work to keep me busy without flooding me with unreasonable amounts.
I was given complete responsibility of the projects I was assigned. However, of course being an intern, these projects were not particularly influential. There was scope to change the way some things were done at Dyson, but I would have loved to work towards some of the machines Dyson are producing and selling. This was not the case for all of the interns, some were given projects to do with Dyson's future projects.
The training I received will be incredibly valuable as I move forward with my career. Maybe less so with studies at university as the work has been fairly specialised. There is a certain way of doing things at Dyson that is different to any other company and so to be able to see a "different" business has been a great opportunity.
The Company
Everyone in the office was very friendly. There is a young, fun atmosphere among the employees and Dyson make sure to organise plenty of fun, whether it’s after work sports, a fun engineering challenge for all employees to build a vehicle out of cardboard or a company party. The open plan offices mean that you get to know lots of other people working at Dyson as well.
The placement was incredibly well organised. From day one, there was plenty to do. Training occupied the first two weeks and continued throughout the placement and the projects I was assigned were well thought out and planned to ensure I had something to work on throughout the placement, without being impossible to finish.
I could not believe the level of investment and training I received. The training was phenomenal, and the support from the team I joined was excellent, making sure I was up to speed with everything I needed to know asap.

I have not yet heard back with regards to job opportunities but as I understand, the chances of getting a job are fairly good if you make it to the placement in the first place. The selection process for interns is pretty rigorous so thats the trickiest bit.
The Culture
There was a really good group of interns while I was working there. Every day, all 20 or so of us would meet for lunch, and we would sometimes meet after work to go for drinks or do something fun. It didn't help that we all lived in different places and commuted to work, but there were often things going on.
The office is based in malmesbury, a small town in the Cotswolds. The cost of living here is slightly over average I imagine, but most interns live in Bath or Bristol and share lifts into the office. Bath is meant to be a bit more expensive, and Bristol isnt too bad... but if you're a student there's always ways of doing things on the cheap. And anyway, you'll be getting paid!
Next to nothing in Malmesbury - as few pubs and bars. Bristol and Bath, where most of the employees live, are great at night!
