The Role
Millbrook Proving Ground offered an excellent insight into an industry I had never thought existed. It was a really enjoyable year, with new things to do every day.
Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and always gave help when required. The placement job is essentially the same as the full time job so its easy to learn alongside colleagues.
The managers and supervisors ensured I had people around me to help with problems.
The department had a huge workload and I often had too much to do each day. This was good as overtime was paid, however it waws fairly stressful.
Millbrook drops you in at the deep end running vehicle tests as a full time engineer would. This meant I learnt fast and adapted well to situations.
The job taught me a lot about cars, which was very helpful for general life. It also gives practise making engineering decisions.
The Company
The office was a very enjoyable environment to work in. There was always banter and jokes to break up the day.
Our undergrauate HR was not particularly good, as there were a lot of students at a different location under the same scheme who got all the support and preferential treatment.
The company has a good track record of employing former placement students, so they invest time and effort training you as a full time engineer.
A lot of previous placement students now work in the department. I got on well with the rest of the department and achieved my tasks well.
The Culture
There was a fairly good social scene available, however i did not really experience it due to other committments.
I continued to live im my university house, so no price difference was percievable.
Although I did not sample it much, it seemed poor.
There were a few department socials, football, and classic car shows.
