The Role
It was overall an enjoyably placement that i spent working on several projects in the Middle East. it started slow as there was not a lot of work, but after a couple of weeks it got better as the workload picked up.
there was a really good atmosphere within the office and you were able to talk with colleagues freely, and also i was able to do work which was actually relevant and helpful. At the end of my placement there was a little presentation for me so that really made me feel valued.
there was good guidance, this was delegeated from my supervisor to a graduate engineer who was working on the same project. he gave good guidance and was any questions I had could be answered easily
It was a slow start with regards to getting access to software in the first 2 weeks, but once I had access to the appropriate software there was always something to do.
Towards the end of my placement, i was able to put my name down on the technical drawings as the Originator who drew the drawings and I was able sign off a set of drawings so overall I was given a fiar amount of responsibility for a placement student.
It has not given me many technical skills that are directly related to my degree, but it has given more of the knowledge and skills of the job rather than what is done at uni (which is only a small part of the job). A summer placement in my first year will surely help me looking for similar placements next summer, and i have been told verbally that it was very good to have me on the team and I would be welcome back (in a different department).
The Company
The office was a fun place to be as people could talk informally at times, but there was still a strong work ethic and you could tell people wanted to be there.
The placement was reasonably well organised - the work was dependent on what projects were going a=on at that point so the workload could be quite varied, but it was in the interests of the team to have as smooth a workload as possible so that helped me in placement.
I attended a Site visits training course (in-house) and there were also several online training modules that i completed. I definitely felt that they gave me the skills i needed to do the tasks I was doing and I also got an insight into other parts of the business
My supervisors have said that I was a real benefit to the team and have verbally said that they would recommend me to other parts of the business.
The Culture
there was a graduate meeting every month for graduates and placement students and beyond that there were socials every month for everyone
It was reasonably cheap. i lived at home during the placement so that lessened any cost impact
I didn't really explore the nightlife, but the evening life was good as I was able to find things to do on 3 nights and relax on the other 2 nights.
The workplace run several health classes, but beyond that there were several other activites outside work, for me it was playing Ultimate frisbee locally on 2 nights, and going to a pub quiz with some friends on another night.
