The Role
I absolutely loved it. The projects I was working on were really enjoyable, and there was a great social side too which made my internship even better.
Really valued. I felt like the work I was doing was really important to the brand I was working on and it was appreciated by the rest of the team.
My manager was amazing - she gave me so much support but worked me hard, but definitely in a very good way! My manager gave me a lot of work as she thought I could handle it, and this really helped raise my profile within my division in the 10 weeks I was there.
Very busy! It would vary but I was never bored and always had work to do. Sometimes I felt like I could have been too busy, but it is important to maintain a good work life balance and just prioritise your workload.
So much responsibility I couldn't believe it at the beginning! In the first week I was given my own projects and had to work with different teams in the company and external stakeholders.
It will be really beneficial, I have had work experience before but I have never learnt so much within a 10 week work period! My time management and confidence skills have probably improved the most, and when I go back to university I will definitely not be afraid to express my opinions in seminars etc. We had public speaking training which was really useful, and I hope that if I return to L'Oreal after uni, the skills I learnt during my internship will really help me stand out against others who haven't previously worked there before.
The Company
The atmosphere in the offices were really exciting and no day was ever the same - you could be trying out a new product one day which hasn't even been launched or speaking to a friend who has just been on a photoshoot for a new campaign for example! There was always friendly buzz in the office and there is a definite "coffee culture" - you are encouraged to go for a coffee with other employees in the business to help learn more about the company and widen your internal network. This meant that everyone was really friendly and approachable and willing to offer advice. I was working in the Active Cosmetics Division (ACD) which I absolutely loved! The atmosphere in our division was amazing - everyone knew everyone and as it is the smallest division, it meant I got to learn so much more about what other projects people were working on and I gained so much perspective about the wider business. You were really encouraged to have a good work life balance within ACD and it was the perfect mix of working hard and playing hard!
It was well organised and very structured. We were lucky to have several "lunch and learns" which is when all of the interns would have lunch with a senior manager and find out more about their career at L'Oreal in an informal environment. They were organised throughout the internship and I found them really useful.
A lot - even though I was there for 10 weeks I received so many opportunities for training which was great, and I felt like the company invested just as much time in training and development if not more, than the interns who were there for a year so it was really appreciated, We had training workshops, inspiring talks from senior managers and talks about all the different careers which are possible at L'Oreal to name but a few.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Really appealing - the management training scheme which is offered for graduates sounds amazing and I am hoping to come back!! However It is very competitive to secure a place on the scheme, even if you have completed an internship there.
The Culture
Such a good social scene I was not expecting it to be as good!! I was on the intern committee and we organised sport socials for all the interns, set up sports teams, and helped organise weekly socials too. The location of the office in Hammersmith is really handy - there are lots of bars and pubs around, and good tube links to get into Central London quickly too.
London is expensive and so you did have to watch your budget. Luckily most of the intern nights out which were arranged were free and the sports socials were cheap too. The canteen at work was well subsidised too which definitely helped.
Was great! We had at least one intern night out every fortnight where we usually went into Central London, but there is of restaurants and bars in Hammersmith too.
Yes, I'm so glad I was on the Intern Committee as helping to organise sport matches and activities for all the interns was a great project to get involved in. Aside from sport teams, we also had a food club where all the interns went to different restaurants in London.
